stouffville student heads to cuba in world youth exchange program st kate gilderdale correspondent when john barrell completes his oac year at stouffville district secondary school he will take a different path from the majority of his peers in pursuing further education instead of going straight to university barrell will spend much of the 199798 school year par ticipating in an exchange program coordinated by canada world youth he heard about the program initially through his father and called cwy for more information i sent in the application sheet and the odds were one in 10 that i would get a position said barrell the competition was con siderable with many appli cants being university stu dents but i got recom mended and the odds went from one in 10 to one in eight of getting selected to go this year he made the cut and attended an orientation ses sion in montreal last march where he learned that he would be expected to contribute 1500 towards john barrell his expenses a portion of which he hopes to raise from service clubs and other community groups we are sponsored by the canadian interna tional development agency which pays the majority of our costs but we have to cover certain things like our flight the first threeandahalf months of the pro gram will be spent in a native community in saskatchewan working as a teachers aid barrell explained ill live with the metis for a while with my cuban exchange buddy i havent met him yet but well meet when i get there communication will not be a problem since his buddy is able to converse in english and french at the end of the first stage of the program ill go to cuba where ill stay for another three-and- ahalf months ill be working in a sugar factory and theres also a chance ill be working in other things to do with agriculture cwy has coordinated international education and exchange programs for young people since 1971 with the emphasis on developing leadership skills promoting understanding of social justice issues and providing a unique opportunity for young people to become involved in international and community development as the organizations mission statement notes canada world youths
