weekender may 3 1997 p2 outdoors golf clubs and fishing rods mix for parkviews bamf ord you would think that by owning a golf course jim bamford would be out on the links every chance he gets the owner of markhams parkview golf club does get an opportunity to bit a few balls just five times last year he recalled if bamford had his druthers though he would just as soon pay more attention to the rouge river and its tributaries which flow freely through his proper ty it is here where bamford an avid angler has set aside an area along a small tributary as a fish hatchery now in its third year of operation bamford along with assistance from the ministry of natural resources and other interest groups including the metro east steelheaders recently collected 150000 rainbow trout eggs for rearing and eventual release into local lake ontario feeder streams things are looking good said bamford on this years egg collection tally that took place on the rouge river and duf- fin creek indeed they are as he noted that the number of eggs collected this year surpassed last seasons total of 40000 and 5800 in the hatcherys first two years bamford is anticipating the eggs placed in five upwelhng boxes to hatch around may 25 he said whatever healthy fry are produced could be released around midjune into water sheds like the rouge river little rouge river highland creek or morningside creek while the rainbow trout rearing program has pro gressed nicely bamford cited they arent the only species he has been involved with bamford received some 77000 brown trout eggs from the ministrys normandale hatchery last november and released some 75000 healthy fry in january above and below the milne dam on the rouge river as well some 25000 atlantic salmon were reared and released below the milne dam back in febru ary with the rearing program being as successful as it is bamford intends to continue hatchery opera tions and if everything goes according to plan he would someday like to get his rearing figures up to the two million fry mark those are strong numbers bamford conceded but i love to fish and hunt and im having a lot of fun fish bites for the fourth time in the last five years the ministry conducted a transfer of rainbow trout on the rouge river above the milne dam mark heaton ministry biologist revealed 116 rainbow trout ranging anywhere from three to 14 pounds were transferred this year this figure he said is up from past years heaton added the fish were also tagged with hopes to monitor their movements upon being placed above the dam heaton said the migratory fish have two routes they can take they can take the main tributary to richmond hill at leslie and major mackenzie and go through the buttonville golf club the other route they can take is to go as far as toogood pond heaton encouraged any angler that catches a tagged fish to report it to the ministry conducted over a fiveday period the transfer was carried out with the assistance from various groups including the metro east steelheaders and 14 stu dents from markville secondary school the kids really enjoyed themselves observed heaton some of them never touched- a fish before and they didnt realize that a river like the rouge held rainbow trout the ministry reminds moose hunters they have outdoors mike hayakawa istry districtarea office or the address on the back of the appli
