31 st baltais gather irt spirit of f rindship ladies who lunch at jaleh victorys elegant rural home have a unique opportunity to learn about cultural diversity in a warm and stimulating atmosphere wednesday april 2 was the first in a series of gettogethers initiated by the bahai women of stoufiville in which the three cs cooking culture and conversation provide the catalyst for a greater understanding and appreciation of the differences between cultures japan was a natural first stop on the tour since victorys niece elahe ghadimi one of the luncheons hosts was born and raised there as well a feature of victorys house is the tranquil tea room with its traditional open work wooden door low table floor cushions and beautiful miniature japan ese garden as each visitor arrived she was invited to create her own name tag and this proved to be an excellent icebreaker gen erating lively conversation and laughter among the group which encompassed a wide diversity of cultures ghadimis sisterinlaw sylvie katirai gave a demonstration of tradi tional dress which also helped to emphasize the importance of the symbols and rituals inherent in japanese society katirai explained that the bahais were offering the get- togethers to the community in the spirit of service and friendship as yet another effort towards the promotion of greater understanding and unity between cultures and peo ples she described it as a twofold process consisting of on the one hand educating her guests as mothers who can pass their knowledge onto the next generation and as women the other wing of humanity the process is completed said katirai through our own close and loving association with members of diverse cultures and backgrounds stepping beyond looking for common ele ments and actually appreciating and enjoying what makes our world so beautiful our differences her presentation was followed by an informal cooking demonstration featuring a cornucopia of japanese dishes which made up the delicious lunch the menu encompassed osunomo kelp salad tempura and rice miso soup and green tea ice cream and the attentive hosts patiently answered questions and offered tips as they prepared each delicacy paper and pens were distributed to allow visitors to jot down recipes and information on ingredients while guests and hosts exchanged animated chat some members of the party dined in the tea room where they learned the rituals of entering sitting and eating the afternoon concluded with tea coffee and cake and ghadimis overview of life in japan followed by an informal group discussion gettogethers are planned for the first wednesday of every month and a different country or culture will be selected each time anyone who is interested in taking part can contact katirai at 8881929
