t pweekendeb september 14 1996 stux ooinion tell us about our outstanding young people who says young people never do anything positive and who says newspapers only put the negative news about youth in print young people are fresh inno vative and have the ability to inspire us their achievements and interests go hand in hand with our community coverage all year but a special kind of recogni tion is underway again this year this newspaper is a member of the ontario com munity newspapers associa tion since 1981 we have spon sored the ontario junior citi zen of the year awards this year bell canada is a cospon- sor each year 12 judges pour viewpoint jo ann stevenson through nominations from all over the province and choose up to 12 young people and one group to receive the award they receive a plaque citing their accomplishments a junior citizen of the year lapel pin 200 and a family portrait with the lieutenant governor as well as a weekend event program for the winner and family the best part about being involved with this program is the opportunity to share with our readers the stories the program draws about excep tional young people some of themwill be hon ored for their undaunted atti tude in living with a disabili ty some have identified a local need and have taken a leadership role by devoting their time and energy towards a community service still others will be selected for responding heroically in a moment of crisis or for the way they showed kindness and compassion the deeds have been done and the nature of these young people has been made known now its time for us to find them and make sure they receive the recognition they deserve last years winners included a young markham woman sara trought injured in a trucktrain accident who came back through sheer will and courage within months came back not just to be the athlete she had been but to height ened awareness of her poten tial for others she said shed had wonderful support from her family and friends but the experience of spending a week end with the other 11 recipi ents was exceptional for her ask for your nomination form at this newspaper office nomi nations must be received by oct 31 on average 24 per cent more than teachers in other provinces demonstrates his undaunting attempt to create a crisis in education and undermine the publics confidence in this provinces education system and its teachers the study that he cites to bolster his attack is flawed in its lack of context not only does it fail to mention the increased cost of living in ontario it neglects to state that the average ontario income is according to the fraser institute 234 per cent higher than the average of the other provinces this suggests that teach ers salaries are in line with those of teachers in other provinces what is more revealing however are the salaries of provincial legislative members a random sample of two western and two eastern provinces discloses the following incomes of legislative members british columbia 86268 manitoba 63315 new brunswick 67643 and nova scotia 79782 ontarios 111000 pay for edu cation minister john snobelen is fully 53 per cent higher than the average of these four provinces and this doesnt take into consideration expenses or the tax- free status of some of the members salary it is clear that the ontario ministry of education is attempting to mislead and misinform the public with political rhetoric and propaganda one would think that the minister of education should be championing our public education system rather than trying to destroy its foundation demoralize its teachers and create unnecessary posturing one can only wonder what the ministers real agenda is it certainly isnt to improve the public system steve bull stouffville everything that can be invented has been invented now who said that do you reckon don cherry preston manning ned ludd nope those prophetic words came from the mouth of one charles h duell chief commissioner of the us office of patents mister duell made his predic tion back in 1899 which means the world had yet to see roadsters radios rocket ships and rock and roll not to mention penicillin polyester prohibi tion and the bay of pigs but we shouldnt snicker too loudly at poor old charlie hes not the only expert ever to mis read his crystal ball take lord kelvin president of the royal soci ety of engineers back at the turn of the century lord kelyin cast a jaded eye at the heavens and pronounced heavierthanair flying machines are impossible fortunately the wright boys were out working in the garage and missed the announcement if you were reading the new york times back in 1939 you might have come across an editorial that concluded the problem with television is that people must sit and keep their eyes glued to a screen the average family hasnt time for that yeah right history is littered with the bleached skulls of soothsayers who shouldve kept their traps shut an internal memo that circulated in the offices of western union about a century ago confidently predicted this telephone has too many short comings as a means of communication the device is inherently of no value to us embarrassing for the writer but not as embarrassing as the prophecy put forward by a yale professor of economics and named irving fisher stocks have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau he told an audience of businessmen regrettably for the professor he made his announcement in the late summer of 1929 just a few weeks before the greatest stock market belly flop in history entertainment gurus fare no better it was hm warner of warner brothers fame who back in 1927 when movies with sound tracks first appeared took his havana corona out of his mouth long enough to growl who the hell wants to hear actors talk and it was movie genius irving thalberg who confided to fellow mogul louis b mayer forget it louis no civil war picture ever made a nick el basic black arthur black mayer like the stubborn cuss he was went ahead and made gone with the wind anyway then there was the producer for decca records who back in 1962 panned a pop group saying we dont like their sound and guitar music is on its way out thus they passed on a chance to sign up the beatles and what of the computer now theres an invention that touches all of our lives in hundreds of ways every sin gle day surely the experts caught the significance of the computer from the beginning well not quite in 1949 a writer in popular mechan ics magazine wrote computers of the future may weigh no more than 15 tons in 1977 the president chairman and founder of digital equipment corpora tion announced there is no reason any one would want a computer in their home even the folks who make the things arent all that bright when it comes to seeing their worth take the experience of a young computer geek named steve so we vent to atari steve recalls and said hey weve got this amazing thing even built with some of your parts what do you think about fund ing us well give it to you we just want to do it pay our salary well come work for you and they said no so then we went to hewlittpackard and they said tley we dont need you you havent got through college yet so steve thats steve jobs and his partner steve wozniak went out- and formed a company on their own you may have heard of it apple computer inc
