i 1 1 i v st tribune april 24 1996 p23 letters redundent teacher declaration will hurt students li dear editor in response to the provincial requirement that the york region board of education trim its bud get by 42 million it has been decided by the board to lay reas sign over 300 teachers due to the union principle of last hired first fired this means that most if not all of the new teachers hired over the last two years will be transferred at stouffville district secondary school 55 teachers will be made redundant by the board effective aug 31 these teachers will be placed in permanent supply positions until concession decision should be reconsidered student says dear editor in response to a letter in the comment section of the tribune of april 17 i would like to discuss students need to become entrepre- neursfor the past two summers i have successfully operated the latcham hall snack bar in memo rial park i undertook this endeav or in the summer of 1994 when the town of whitchurchstouffville was privatizing their concessions because i needed secure employ ment to pay for my schooling this year my tender was denied in favor of another applicant despite my past experience i worked in the arena snack bar for seven years prior to the privatiza tion and hardearned success because of this i may be unable to complete my honors university degree this fall i feel that my youth was perhaps used against me and that perhaps proper consideration was not taken when evaluating my enter prising endeavor having first opened my own business at the age of 19 if students must become entre preneurs making jobs for them selves where none exist in these lean times people should try to assist these efforts rather than quashing fruitful successful busi nesses and curtailing students chances of being selfsufficient c hurrle markham january 1997 after which date their status will depend on events that unfold over the next few months in addition five more teachers will be declared surplus and reassigned to other schools in york region our children will be edu cated by fewer teachers all of whom will be required to teach more classes in order to make up the shortfall this can only result in a negative effect on our chil drens education our teachers at stouffville volunteer many hours of their own time to extra cur ricula activities eg band sports computers field trips student council etc due to the heavier teach ing loads many of these activities will be seriously curtailed or cease altogeth er and after school sporting event may be delayed or cancelled outright as all teachers will be required in the classrooms and there will be none available to escort the team these are just two of the effects of the slash and burn approach to budget trimming adopted by the board we believe that the follow ing suggestions would give results that are less harmful and more productive even though some cuts have already been made at the administrative level a strong effect here particu larly in areas of senior administrators salaries could yield additional sav ings transportation needs could be reviewed some services could be linked to existing public transit sys tems negotiate with the unions in order to encourage more senior teachers to retire by negotiating an appro priate roll back in salaries share the financial burden among all the teachers not just those last hired these are just four sugges tions and if we all work together we can find solu tions to these problems solutions that do not harm our childrens education or place all of the financial bur den on one small hard working segment of our soci ety the situation at sdss is used as an example but sim ilar cuts are affecting all schools in york region we ask every parent to write to their school trustee stating their opposition to these measures perhaps this newspaper could print a clip out coupon for the parent to sign and send to the director of edu cation for the board his address is bill hogarth director of education york region board of education 60 wellington street west box 40 aurora ont l4g 3h2 childrens education support committee stouffville attention
