st tribune april 24 1996 p21 wviiai v high school sports ready to shut down by bruce stapley correspondent the york region board of educations financial crisis could result in the complete shut down of the extra cur- ricular athletic program at stouffville district sec ondary school the school which will see 11 of its 55 teachers declared surplus or redundant next fall is preparing for the worst while teachers at the school have agreed to continue to offer the volunteer programs until the end of the current school year they have declared they will withdraw all extracurricular volunteer programs at the beginning of the 199697 school year if the board follows through with its plan to adjust teachers time tables so they will teach seven classes every two days instead of the current six principal rod leonard said the face of the school will be altered drastically if the programs are chopped if things dont change i would tend to believe that in sep tember things extracurricular programs wont hap pen said leonard on monday for a school like sdss where one of the great things is the extra curricular program its going to be a different place phys ed teacher sue leroy said the effect of the chop ping of the staff would be devastating to the schools sports program this is a smaller school so people have to do more things she said weve lost heather hendricks and christa bradburn for example which means weve lost six coaches because they each coached three teams the issue was addressed at a parentteacher liaison group meeting held at the stouffville school last tues day a special open meeting was to be held at the board of education offices in aurora on tuesday to inform the public about the implications of the proposed time table changes practice makes perfect sea sons stouffville amateur hockey league sahl championship finals and if the action is anything like it has been in recent years it will once again feature some of the most heartstop ping high drama hockey of the year in stouffville last years sahl finals saw the 40 and over crown decided on zeev wereks youve got to love that name goal with a second to go in overtime which came on the heels of frank jagos last second regulation time marker title decided by shootout the 30 and over title was determined in the fifth and final round of a shootout in 1995 when dean tremaine clicked while john carrick held- his ground at the other end of the rink in net this years showdown once again produced a dramatic overtime goal and a shootout memories of the montreal canadiens overtime victory over the los angeles kings during the 1993 stanley cup finals came to mind as brent stachel scored on a breakaway in overtime to give the sahls 30 and over title to a short staffed kings out fit the kings were running on fumes while being badly outplayed by the williamson motors jets for most of the extra period at one point in overtime the jets who had held a 31 lead at one point in the game looked to have scored the big goal with kings stellar goalkeeper al fockler sprawled on the ice and half the net to shoot at the jets shooter played pinball with both goal posts and the puck somehow stayed out seconds later fockler came up with a save that made the great train rob bery of wild west folklore look like an act of charity by comparison the kings were simply trying to dodge the bullet and take their chances on a shootout when stachel caught the jets pinching and took his dash to des tiny absentee king player kim kavluk he of the 100th running of the boston marathon fame couldnt have been any more exhausted than these guys after climbing up heartbreak hill and into boston the following day ironically it was john carricks younger brother kelly who was in goal for the capitols last week when the caps prevailed in the shoot out to win the 20 and over title thrive on pressure obviously the carrick boys thrive on pressure and once again the emer gence of the underdog was a prominent theme as none of the three divisional leaders made it to the finals this time around the stouffville travel blackhawks placed sixth in the 40 and over flight yet won three and tied one in the play off round robin to be finalists they were finally stopped 20 by the second place gallo red wings in the big one with wes wilson coming up big in the wings net the championship match was a reversal of the playoff opener between the two teams which the hawks won 21 the intensity of the final was reflected by the several minor skirmishes which broke out showing that the old guys were out there to win leaving the fun for the regular season in the 30 and over class the first place flames were sent packing when they lost to the cellar dwelling devils in the round robin leaving the jets and the kings to contest the title tilt thorough statistics a big tip of the hat to norm dunn whose painstaking computerized com pilation of sahl stats this season was truly a study in thoroughness hopefully the guys who like to see their names up on the wall with their updated stats appreciated the 13 or so hours a week norm spent plugged into his computer to deliver the goods someone be sure to buy this man a drink at the annual sahl banquet on may 4
