motus o dance theatre brings its unique magic to two performances of alice an inspired interpretation of lewis carrolls famous novels alice in wonderland and through the looking glass motus o a stouffvillebased dance collective was formed in 1990 by james croker jack lan- genhuizen and cindy croker who have been performing together since 1980 the troupes artistic vision was to create original works based on real life experiences by incorporat ing its members cornucopia of tal ents which include modern bal let jazz and ballroom dance as well as mime theatre music and voice the result is an innovative witty and vibrant work which is as accessible to children as it is to adults everyone will recognize carrolls eccentric characters from tweedle dum and tweedle dee to the cheshire cat and the mad hatter all decked out in dazzling cos tumes and displaying awesome acrobatic skills an eclectic musical score which runs the gamut from tchaikovsky ma rkh am th eat re motus o alice motus o proves once again that the art of dance can have wide audience appeal the work was choreo graphed by the collectives three founding members in collaboration with petra makenbach motus o has performed to wide acclaim at festivals around the world and its members have participated in many workshops in ontario schools recently students in stouffville were given a pre view of the fabulous cos tumes which are featured in the show the dance collective has been invited to represent canada at the fifth annual orlando fringe festival in florida from april 1221 1996 their featured produc tion human knots was a hit with critics and audi ences in australia and throughout ontario more than 20000 fans are expected to attend the us festival in orlando alice is a march break treat conflict resolution to school helping students help each other is an idea whose time has come at orchard park public school encouraged by the success of the conflict resolu tion program in which older students are trained to mediate in school yard disputes a guidance teacher at the school and a youth and child care worker from the board of education have taken the concept a step further the result panther players has students from grades 6 and 7 supervising outdoor games for pri mary pupils at lunch recess we found that a lot of the kids didnt know the typical school yard games and some of them would go out and get into fights said board worker cameron sauder we decided to get grades six and seven to be proactive and teach the younger kids to do some thing which would cut down on the conflicts as well said teacher bill mcmahon it provides an alternative to the younger students who dont have anyone to play with at recess the intermediate students who volunteered to participate were asked to fill out an application and were interviewed by mcmahon and viceprinci pal john hopkins 12 students were selected and split up into teams of six with each team supervis ing games for one lunch recess each sixday cycle before the program started the students attend ed a number of training sessions and they meet weekly with mcmahon and sauder to plan upcom ing activities and review the
