volleyball teams each took a big step towards their respective york region secondary schools athletic association aaa titles thursday but for the junior boys hockey team a berth in the regional semi finals was as easy as opening up the mail both the midget and junior spar tans girls volleyball squads pre vailed in their divisional round robin play downs the midgets who downed broth er andre chs feb 16 to advance to thursdays round robin at middlefield ci finished first in their pool then defeated st roberts chs 1716 915 1512 in a gruelling emotionally- charged final it was one of the biggest wins of my coaching career said midget coach sue leroy the girls played smart picking the holes in the opposition the junior spartans who defeat ed unionville hs feb 16 to advance placed second in their pool at thursdays round robin competition in unionville they then swept sacred heart chs 1510 154 in the final the midgets were to play aurora ss at fridays yraa championships while the juniors were to take on richmond hill ss in their champi onship show down both finals were to be held in aurora the senior spartans who placed first in their south division regular season standing were upset in the opening round junior boys advance meanwhile the junior boys spartans hockey team was award ed its quarter final match with st joan of arc chs when their opponents decided not to contest the game the spartans automatically advanced to the yrssaa semi finals and will host the winner of the huron hts ssvaughan ss quarter final thursday at 2 pm at the rec centre angies rallies from shark bite to cut down sabres the angies eatery midget girls rebounded from a 32 loss to the scarborough sharks on feb 12 to hand the stoney creek sabres a 6- 1 defeat five days later in north metro girls hockey league action dallas hegland sarah morrison katie white dawn williamson don valley north lexus toyota athlete of the week jen strype and katie cuff each scored once for angies assists went to league which plays winter soccer out of a minifield located in the mount joy arena the duo who have amassed a sizeable collec tion of trophies and awards playing summer soccer with the whitchurch-stouf- fville soccer club wssc since moving to town eight years ago are more than holding their own against the boys from markham damian is leading the under 19 league in goals with 12 despite the fact hes still only 17 fourteen year old nicholas is atop the under 15 division scor ing race with 13 goals to this point the adjustment to the smaller field and artificial turf took some getting used to at first damian and nicholas noted with a field half the size of a regular soccer pitch and only seven men aside its a faster game with an emphasis on ball control you have to be quick with your feet said damian theres no time to dilly dally around theyre coming at you as sport- notes s t- a p soon as you get the ball added nicholas you either pass it or shoot it success on the soccer field is nothing new to the ser jeant brothers damians wssc squad captured the league title last season prevailing over crews from richmond hill king city woodbridge and uxbridge in the playoff champi onship damians two goals gave the stouffville unit a hard fought 21 win over woodbridge he also won the speed kicking competi tion at the adidas soccer tournament held at york university last summer booting a soccer ball at a speed of 111 kilometres per hour nicholas wssc team took the league crown in 1994 one of several titles won by teams the younger serjeant has played for through the years the coming summer could see damian and nicholas bid the wssc farewell damian will try out later this month for the markham under 21 squad which plays in the ontario soccer league nicholas has been asked to play for a markham under16 team while nicholas is just reaching an age where long range life goals begin to take shape damian has already begun to consider what the future could bring if he continues to experi ence success on the soccer field i really want to go to the united states on a soccer scholarship i plan to keep looking for the right oppor tunity to come along he admits hed love to suit up for canada in a world cup match some day thats a dream every kid who plays soccer has he said but it definitely can happen for nicholas hes content just to go out and give it his best shot on a day to day basis i havent really thought about it im just concen trating on scoring goals for now while the age difference between the two brothers keeps them from playing on the same team there will be a coming together of sorts on the soccer field this spring damian will serve as a coach on the junior boys soccer team nicholas will play for at brother andre chs damian was assistant coach and a play er with the brother andre senior squad last season i want to put something back in said damian of his commitment to helping other teens learn the game
