sec ondary school spartan squads claimed gold and silver medals respectively at the annual colling wood girls volleyball tournament recently hendricks whose senior unit capped nine nonstop hours of vol leyball by taking the title and leroy whose midgets recovered from a snaillike start to finish sec ond found their vehicles creative ly decorated when they headed out to the parking lot at the end of a long day in the gym for hen dricks the pretzels toilet paper and other miscellaneous touches adorning her vehicle made up the second unexpected victory sur prise the first was the cold mini- shower that greeted her after the championship match much like that given winning nfl football coaches however leroy whose van was afforded the same treatment as the car of her coaching colleague was overheard in the school cafe teria a few days later mouthing the famous i dont get mad i just get even maxim time she said is on her side after all she grinned her midgets will be at the school another three or four years look out ladies on the court in collingwood it was danielle timms alison crow- der melissa miller lisa swain jen reesor and sara jefferson leading the way for the junior spartans in a solid team effort for the midgets the high light was coming back from a 133 deficit to defeat stayner in their second match early in the morn ing it wasnt a slow start it was a dead start quipped coach leroy who credited a caffeine and sugar buzz with turning things around the senior spartans managed a second place finish in pool play before dropping their quarter final contest gilroy spytz earn recognition melissa gilroy and rob spytz were the schools athletes of the month for january in the works fitness centre markham spon sored program gilroy a multi- sport athlete plays power for the senior spartan girls volleyball team and made a large contribu tion at the collingwood tourney the fourthyear student has been as asset to all teams she has played for spytz who sacrificed a chance to play hockey for the uxbridge junior c bruins when he chosen to suit up with the school junior hockey team has led the team to an undefeated season so far he leads the team in points plays on the power play and has incurred only four penalty minutes icemen clinch top spot the spartans hockey team was to close out the regular season with road games feb7 and 14 they are guaranteed a firstplace finish in the yrssaa east divi sion and will open up the playoffs at the rec centre feb 19 at 2 pm as of feb 6 the team had a record of seven wins a tie and no defeats they also won the very competitive north york high school tournament held earlier this winter not bad for their first year as a team coaches honored spartans coaches erin wilkin son ron dempster dave connell and freddie the flash robbins were honored in a recent issue of yrbe board briefs a york region board of education publication wilkinson and dempster were rec ognized for coaching the girls field hockey team which took the york title last fall connell and robbins coached the schools junior and senior boys cross country running teams to first place finishes in the york championships last novem ber racing on frozen pond snowmobiling enthusiasts were out on musselman lake last weekend to participate in the musselman lake winterfest 96 among those racing their snowmobiles on the frozen id a major peewee clippers were solid in goal but lacking on offence at the whitchurchstouffville minor hockey association tournament held over the feb 24 weekend the clippers goalkeeping tandem of gra ham smith and dan joyce held the opposi tion to seven goals in three games but the aikens outfit managed only four of their own as they won one of three games played the clippers edged whitby 21
