year will have greater impact than a townbacked body in attracting new business to whitchurch- stouffville the economic development action committee ed ac came on line last fall as a joint body involving the whitchurch- stouffville chamber of commerce the local bia independent business people and the municipality it was formed when repre sentatives from local business associations approached council with an offer to replace the towns own economic development advisory committee edac with one of their own design the chambers edac is a little more aggressive and a little less political said town cao merlin dewing who is the towns representative on the new body dewing said the body has the potential to be more effective because its being run by people with their finger on the pulse of business its headed up by aggressive business peo ple from the municipality and that impress es potential new businesses who might like to set up here david turner who is chair of the new edag said his group is already taking strides to bring new business to town were working with two or three companies that are seriously looking to locate in town said turner a chamber executive member said an effort is also being made to reassess the existing business community chamber and bia members are being surveyed as to their needs with edac pledging to take action to deal with issues important to the business sector issues relating to the town will be taken up with council there are also plans to make available a pool of local mar keting financial and operations experts for small businesses that cant afford consul tants fees the key to this committees success insist ed turner will be its close relationship with the town he said edac and the chamber have both agreed to play a role in the towns current growth management study which will chart residential and commercial devel opment for the next two decades weve really been encouraged by the mayor wayne emmerson hes very proactive with regards to business in this town we want to work hand in hand with council to attract business that makes for a very healthy environment for the town emmerson recently told the chamber he will support edac in its initiatives we have some great businesses here and theres room for more said emmerson were here and we want to help dewing said the original edac formed by the town will be put on hold if council sees that the chambers edac is succeeding it will drop the other body opp auxiliary looks for local volunteers the ontario provincial police auxiliary is an organization of fully trained
