st tribune november 1995 p 7 people foodbank head thanks community for support by bruce stapley correspondent while provincial government cut backs have evoked predictions of a breakdown in voluntary sup port systems for the poor the whitehurchstouffville foodbank continues to deliver the goods this community has been just wonderful said foodbank co ordinator esther powell who helped found the foodbank in december of 1990 they have never slackened i and weve always had sufficient the thanksgiving drive was the best weve had in a long time were so thankful for the contin ued generosity but while this towns foodbank is able to keep up with the demand powell said it is the exception rather than the rule as a continuing tough economy com bines with decreasing provincial social assistance funding to deplete foodbank stocks else where we havent seen any change here as a result of government cut backs but i dont think we can compare us to toronto and most of the other foodbanks in york region depend on the daily food bank in toronto at times but we never ihave powell said a small town has an advantage in tough times because people have a sense of community not often experienced in larger durban centres people with foodbanks in cen tres like newmarket ask me why our foodbank is so successful its i because the community spirit in stouffville is better than any ive seen she said urban centres would probably be more successful if they broke into smaller sections for foodbanks and similar volun teer support systems to create a sense i of community the foodbank which operates out of churchill baptist church on ninth line north of the aurora sdrd services an average of 85 families at any given time its 35 volunteers include an eight person executive which also serves clients and two pick up people who regularly patrol the towns six stouffville drop off spots volunteers also deliver food to clients who have no way of get ting to the foodbank powell said while its always dif ficult for first time clients at the foodbank the volunteers are com- until you walk a mile in somebody elses shoes you just dont know esther powell coordinator of the whitehurchstouffville foodbank said there is a genuine need in the community for the foodbanks ser vices photasjoerd witteveen sniff out those who would abuse the system powell said clients are never judged until you walk a mile in some body elses shoes you just dont know we have so many people come to us who say i never thought id be coming here there really is genuine need and hurting out there v she said most clients use the services of the foodbank on a spo radic basis people using the food- bank include single mothers peo ple on welfare those who have lost their jobs and are trying to get by while they look for another and people on or awaiting uic benefits she said current gov ernment cutbacks will serve to restore tradi tional methods of lend ing support to people in need while she agrees with the basic principle of welfare and social programs people have come to rely too heavily on government support she sug gested through the years govern merit hand outs have made us irresponsible i feel the responsi ble way of helping people in need should fall back into the hands of family church and community like it was in the beginning powell said that while the towns foodbank is essentially a nondenominational organiza tion it has strong church ties bibles and devotional materials are available and the clients often ask for them she added she said she would oppose any attempt to have foodbanks taken over by government because the compassion of the volunteers would be lost genuine love is expressed here not like a government bureaucra cy fb used clothing is available to those whose needs go beyond food and the volunteers are able to direct clients if they- have mitted to helping make the best greater needs said powell of a bad situation for people who find themselves in need of food for their families theres no bureaucratic forms to be filled out just compassion and support she said if you can get up the nerve to help has changed their lives i come up to me and say 1 need firmly believe ifs the love of god food thats good enough for me shining through the people of while volunteers can usually stouffville for powell the payoff comes in the form of witnessing the posi tive effects the foodbank and its volunteers and supporters have on clients clients will tell us that our waste reduction week open house november 11 1995 the annual waste reduction week for the
