seniors days and car rallies many of these events have aided such worthwhile causes as the ms society and salva tion army in lieu of a scenic park many couples starting out on their lifes journey paused at the britton homes for photographs many bus trips for seniors- have ended in happy memories for those who do not get the chance to experience the out doors very often apparently according to some neighbors the generosity of the brittons reached critical mass this summer as they claim party after party took place on the grounds they complained to the town and the town put its foot down true we must respect our compromise reached the brit- wanted bylaws or no its a neighbors and not have exces- tons have given a great deal to bloody shame to turn in the sive noise or disturbances but betty and roily fox well keep going until all the hurting has stopped you should be glad im notvpur mother i did it for the first time in their lives i did my offsprings back-to- school shopping before school was back the day before to be exact when the vast majority of rele vant merchandise had either been cleaned out or was in the process of being mangled under foot by ravening hoards of indi viduals equally unmindful of scoutings wise admonition be prepared my daughters list she was indisposed and unable to accom pany me took into account her mothers infamous inability to engage in forward planning her first request was for eight binders in as many different col ors as possible what she got was seven black binders and a slightly battered green one when i broke the bad news she smiled tolerantly and assured me it didnt matter from her vantage point after 15 years in my company even one different color was a rare bonus indeed the fact that she had an entire complement of binders at all was cause for celebration r there was not a pencil to be found in the store never mind a whole pack full and while lined paper was still available my son unearthed two of the last three packages from a battered box on the bottom shelf stocks of the unlined variety had long since been exhausted after much deliberation in the seasonal aisle where back-to- school was temporarily king i had managed to purchase just four from a list of nine vital items exotic stuff like erasers whiteout and threering binder reinforcements were nowhere to be found tm going to see if theyre hid ing somewhere else i said to my son who was maintaining a friendly demeanor in the face of kates corner my incompetence and the likeli hood that he would once again be borrowing supplies from fel low students until store shelves were replenished he looked doubtful but kindly forbore to voice his skepticism the stationery department it transpired was a veritable trea sure trove of stuff no student can afford to be without at the dawning of a new school year better still it appeared to have been overlooked by fellow members of the last minute club who were still fighting over custody of the sole remaining calculator in the aisle from hell conversely items in stationery were neatly stacked in their rightful places and an apprais ing glance quickly revealed that most of what you were looking for was at your fingertips i felt strangely exonerated and lightheaded bearing in mind it would be another whole year before i would be forced to undergo the same charade on the other hand there will be plenty of panic shopping oppor tunities between now and then to launch my blood pressure into the stratosphere i if nothing else this column may provide clues as to why young trick or treaters whose route takes them via chateau gilderdale always end up with fists full of those rather unpleas ant little candies rolled in trans parent paper or brands of toffee which rip out baby teeth and have a bouquet strongly remi niscent of motor oil think positive kiddies i could have been your mother
