st tribune september 13 1995 p13 litics of tier two junior a hockey the ongoing squabble between the ontario hockey federation ohf the ontario hockey association oha and the renegade metro junior hockey league mjhl has taken on new relevance now that stouffville has landed its own junior a oha squad since its inception the metro loop has been denied the privi leges afforded ohasanctioned leagues in this province that means the league is on the out side looking in with regards to taking part in any tourna ments national championships benefit and insurance programs provided by the canadian ama teur hockey association which recognizes the oha as the offi cial voice of junior hockey in southern ontario the ohf and oha came to terms just over five months ago when the former body decided to reaffirm the jurisdiction of the latter over junior hockey in southern ontario the two organizations resolved their dif ferences which included the ohas objection to mjhls affil iation with the ohf through the metropolitan toronto hock ey league mthl this had rankled the oha which had been confirmed as the govern ing body for southern ontario when the ohf was formed in 1989 having resolved their own dif ferences the ohf and oha then joined forces to try to con vince the mjhl to take up membership in the oha for the coming seasonitwould appear however that five months of negotiations have proved fruit less oha officials said the oha and mjhl met unofficially in early july and came up with a proposal that would have seen mjhl teams admitted into the oha on a graduated two- or threeyear basis but the provincial junior a league the league which the stouffville spirit is now a member of rejected the deal in midaugust as did the ohas board of drrec- tors oha president brent ladds explained that the proposal died because neither the provincial league board of gov ernors nor the oha directors could rationalize mjhl members being afforded reduced membership costs as well as special membership privileges over existing oha mem bers the oha then extend ed the mjhl an inyita- tibtito full membership but the mjhl didnt acknowledge the offer stay tuned i rugby at
