113th royal canadian hen ley regatta in st catharines on aug 10 the whitchurchstouffville resident finished first to win the theo dubois trophy in the mens intermediate lightweight sculler finals at canadas premier rowing event which is also north americas largest regatta he prevailed in a field of 56 entrants from across north america for bellerby who turns 24 this month the big win enabled him to make good on a pledge made after he finished near the bottom of the heap in his first henley in 1993 i was second last in my first try which was my first year of competitive rowing said bellerby after that first year i set it as my goal to win it last year i was sixth in the final f bellerby who took up rowing while completing a fouryear economic specialist business course at the university of torontos erindale campus started out by selling his 17yearold beginner wooden training boat it was replaced by a hudson elite racing hullv the same model used by canadian olympic medalist silken laumann to win the worlds singles champi onship before the 1992 olympics in barcelona equipped with the right boat bellerby then set about to get into the best physical condition possible he became affiliated with the don rowing club in missis- sauga between school semesters and set himself a rigid training routine from last november through this past spring he worked out six days a week three times a day on rowing machines weights running and cross training after posting a qualifying time that included him in the top 10 in canada in his category on the machines he was invited to train alongside the canadian rowing team in london ont this spring while there he placed 11th in a national team tryout race which saw the top two finishers make the cana dian team his recent henley win was particularly gratifying because he finished ahead of the men who placed fifth and seventh in that tryout with his goal of a henley gold medal under his belt hes now eyeing another shot at making the national team the guy who finished second in the henley event which he won last year is now on the canadian team said bellerby bellerby who graduated from u of t this past spring will enroll in a health studies degree course at brock university in st catharines this fall he said he will be looking to further his abilities by taking advantage of the top level coaching which will be available there phj brock is setting up a very competitive rowing pro gram im going for the coaching tve been pretty well picking up my coaching in dribs and drabs to this point bellerby is hoping to combine his business degree with a health related diploma for a fulfilling career well see where it takes me he said his ultimate rowing goal is to wear canadas colors at the 2000 olympics he feels that at age 28 hell be in an ideal position to make his mark on the international scene the two top singles rowers on the canadian team now are 34 and 35 years old ive got my fitness down now all i need is to catch to end the inning in a womens fun league contest at the town park diamond on monday 1 photossteve somerville peewee boys bring home silver justin mckeiver batted at a near 700 clip and jamie alston brad clubine and adam ferguson con tributed outstanding pitching as the stouffville peewee boys rep softball team won the silver medal at the recent ontario amateur soft ball association peewee b champi onships in kemptville the determined stouffville squad won four of its six games played including a 20 shutout of tourna ment cofavorite napanee in a piv otal game which decided which team advanced to the title match alston fired a onehitter and cracked a grand slam home run as stouffville defeated cobourg 93 in their first game mckeiver had a homer and two singles while mark burkholder had two hits three stolen bases and two runs ty armstrong and fergu son each banged out two hits jesse wood greg barnes and jeff boad way hit singles- stouffville fell 72 to napanee in game two facing elimination they roared back as clubine and ferguson threw consecutive onehitters in a 31 win over owen sound and an 8- 2 triumph over orangeville burkholder stole two bases before scoring the winning run against owen sound with karl bossis bunt single plated the insurance run against orangeville ferguson and alston each doubled while mckeiver and boadway each had three hits armstrong boadway barnes and wood also had hits in the rematch with napanee- clubine pitched a superb game adding a single and double to the offensive effort as well mckeiver lifted his average to 700 with two hits stouffville was defeated 118 by a well rested waterford outfit in the finals the secondplace finish was satis fying because the stouffville roster included five players who had never played at the rep association saying the team had emerged from trying and controversial circumstances dunkeldbowls up a storm glenda dunkeld was the common denominator as three stouffville lawn bowling club teams posted impressive results in recent out of town tournament action dunkeld teamed up with betty kirven and doris farthing to win the trophy in the new greens anniversary tournament held in lindsay aug 21 three days later the mixed trebles crew of dunkeld paul muir and jane hachey travelled to midland and won three games to place second overall the same day stouffvilles elmer and doris farthing won two games high in a mixed pairs tourney in aurora dunkeld her husband cliff and the farthings took the jack rogers trophy for high three games at the monora mixed fours tournament aug 27 at the annual brillinger insurance trophy competition in stouffville aug 26 the high three game winner was the stouffville team of elmer farthing murray ferguson and connie breen runner up was the bob walker team from markham
