community cuts in funding to ymca devastating by joan ransberry staff reporter although the province has put the kibosh on a stouffville daycare facility and a youth resource centre the project is far from dead as local municipal officials try to come to terms with the fact that stouffville has not escaped the axewelding provincial govern ment one local councillor has put together a response plan in the hopes of finding anoth er way to save the local childrens projects the need for financial restraint has prompted the provincial government to can cel all money for the local ymca project whitchurchstouffville councillor judy scala has confirmed scala told the tribune that the much- needed daycare and youth centre projects were slated to operate out of a building on civic ave directly behind the local munici pal office the money was needed to equip and reno vate the premises architects estimated the renovation cost alone to be 155000 janet johnson a ymca official told the tribune that the cost of program equipment and toys and fencing for the daycare would be another 100000 johnson said the ymca along with the help of scala have been working on the pro ject since january this is very disappointing said johnson scala meanwhile said she was dumb founded to learn that the province was withdrawing its support but these things happen well just have to find the money elsewhere the need is there if we pull together as a community we can do it stressed scala after a series of meetings with the province and the full realization of all the cutbacks to various projects from the impact of the new provincial government was in fact significant said scala in late july ontario finance minister ernie eves announced cuts to dozens of gov ernment programs including the stouffville project as part of the total package that will save 19 billion in the current fiscal year the province will save the 14 billion by cancelling or lowering funding for specific programs and for capital projects and 500 million by giving all ministries individual targets for cuts from current operating bud gets said eves ontario premier mike harris said the cuts are essential because his government inherited a worse financial situation than expected scala has been the stouffville projects strongest supporter councils appointee on the local youth liaison committee is far from defeated scalas game plan is well in place i am prepared to orchestrate and pull together with the assistance of the school boards corporations and town businesses bur parks and recreation department and most importantly the community itself a proposal that we can strive for within the year to address the youth programs in whitchurchstouffville said scala the local councillor is also appealing to yorkdurham mpp julia munro to help the tribune could not reach munro at press time monday theres no question the need for youth programs is great in the local municipality said scala whitchurchstouffville council has backed a call for the establishment of an immediate ad hoc committee to fully investigate and ultimately recommend a plan of action meanwhile johnson said the 155000 plus renovation cost suggests the ymca will have to seek a different location well have to find another place said johnson government goes to school municipal government may soon find itself on the curriculum in stouffvilles elementary school on tuesday whitchurch- stouffville council backed a call to have the student page program introduced to senior students in stouffvilles grade schools through the program two grade 8s will become parlimentary pages and meet with a member of town staff to review the council agendas the pages will also attend local council meetings after the meeting the students will ask the
