a future that would see him eventually ordained as a united church minister more than twoandahalf decades later he is leaving again as stouffvilles citizen of the year for 1995 with eight years of unswerving community dedication and involvement behind him reed was the nearunani mous choice as this years citizen of the year spon sored annually by the tri bune he was cited by resi dent after resident for the admirable way in which he conducted himself as minis ter of stouffville united church since 1987 and for how he gave himself in a variety of ways to the com munity in which he lived reed became known for opening the doors of his church to anyone wishing to come in and for extending professional and personal courtesy to people of all reli gious persuasions he head ed up his churchs successful youth group and involved himself in seniors activities including divinity tours reed was cited by resident after resident for the admirable way in which he conducted himself as a minister and for how he gave himself in a variety of ways to the community in which he lived which travelled as far as texas alberta and prince edward island he has been an enthusias tic member of the stouffville ministerial association helping organize the annual strawberry festival service in the park he became noted for his magnanimous attitude when it came to conducting weddings and funerals for church out siders and helped arrange christmas care packages for the needy armed with a keen sense of humor reed has been a stouffville advocate who supported town projects such as music mania for whom he has served as audi torium manager since 1989 he was a parent volunteer for local public school trips and worked with the cubs and scouts as part of their religious program reed was surprised to the point of embarrassment upon being named citizen of the year i had no idea i never gave it any thought said reed its a great honor but humbling in that i didnt do anything more than anyone else to try to keep that village atmos- please see page 3 fake lawyer faces charges by joan ransberry staff reporter a stouffville man charged in february with being a fake lawyer is now facing fraud charges david maharaj kissen also known as david m kissondath and michael kissen has been charged with five counts of fraud involv ing four oshawa residents and one clarington resident reported durham detective bob schumacher kissen 42 will appear in criminal court in oshawa on july 7 r these charges are the result of the accused holding himself out to be a lawyer when in fact he was not and never has been a lawyer regis tered to practice law in ontario said schu macher between march of 93 and february 94 the five durham residents paid kissen a total of 48315 for his services as a court lawyer and for business deals that never materialized explained schumacher in early february toronto police charged kissen with impersonating a lawyer after a fraud detective witnessed kissen tell a judge he was yet another lawyer representing david kissen on a charge of impersonating a lawyer in this case kissen had a friend pretend to be him metro detective chuck vander heyden told the tribune kissen came very close to convincing a crown attorney in a toronto court to drop the charges he added there is growing evidence that the party has actually appeared in criminal courts although he had never been called to the bar he was never challenged in court vander heyden told the tribune the detective added that the actions have resulted in significant losses to those parties that he collected fees from without providing any legal services and other cases where has appeared in court the law society of canada has been made aware of this case kissen will make separate appearances in toronto courts in connection with the fake lawyer charges said vander heyden recording deal for wallace lawnie wallace has finally made her big breakthrough the 18yearold ballantrae new country singersongwriter with all 11 tracks of the first abum have been completed along with a video to accom pany her first single release wild child a second video is to be made shortly to go with the second single release with a track entitled little lies big trouble the tentative choice wal lace describes the music on the album as funky country on the edge william wal lace said his daughter is ready for the chal lenge that goes with landing a record con tract were going to push it as far as we can he said he said a meeting was to be arranged in the near future with mca to plan a mar keting schedule with a crosscanada radio promotional tour likely to begin sometime in august he said lawnie would probably be linked up with a wellknown mca artist such as vince gill for a 1996 performing tour across the country lawnie said the deal with mca guarantees her two albums and could see her cut as many as five its a longterm commit ment some of the details still have to be worked out wallace has been singing since she was seven she got into music seriously at the age of 10 winning several gold medals at such competitions as the cne music festi val she is a regular performer at stouf fville area dining establishments
