wednesday night principal alan dickson confront ed the subject head on at the out set of the annual athletic awards ceremony speaking in front of a packed audience of students teachers volunteer coaches and parents the big cheese acknowledged hes heard the complaints of those who would bring sport down a notch or two at sdss dickson defended the place of sport at the school saying its pop ularity was a simple function of student interest and staff and vol unteer commitment a former high school coach him self who believes in the character- building potential of team sports dickson said if people who had interest would band together and show the same dedication and interest as those involved in ath letics at the school they too could see their programs succeed community volunteer coach brian simcoe and oac student and star athlete mike green added fuel to dicksons argument simcoe who displays the same kind of caffeinebuzz enthusiasm exemplified by sdss volunteer track coach fred robbins closed out the night with a stirring trib ute to sport delivered in his oft times comical rapidfire style called the most inspiring such speech he had ever heard in his years at the school by boys physi cal education head dave connell simcoe pointed out the unique opportunities afforded by sport only in sport do you get to expe rience the rewards of trailing an opponent by a huge deficit only to scratch and claw your way to a seemingly impossible victory conversely only in sport must you learn to accept the harsh real ity of losing out by a fraction of a second even though youve just recorded your best result ever he suggested the difference between those who excel and those who are also rans in sport is mini mal the 300 hitter in baseball the guy who gets paid millions of dollars only makes one more hit in every 20 at bats than the player who hits 250 and gets paid a frac tion of that amount the secret is he said to give that little extra on a consistent every day basis the life parallel was obvious he con cluded extraordinary people are just ordinary people who have given it a little more he offered green stood up and recited a poem dont quit while delivering the thank yous to all who worked to make the athletic program such a success at sdss the poem could serve as an anthem for people given to any pursuit in life it spoke of how the depth of despair so often precedes a victory in sport or in life of how tragic it is when a person gives up not knowing they were so close to making their big breakthrough its when things seem worst that you mustnt quit success is just failure turned inside out he read the schools athletic council a group of volunteers from all grades took a bow at nights end for its masterful job of organizing the intramural sports program and for putting together please see page 19 top student athletes achieve recognition by bruce stapley correspondent eleven championship ban ners were unfurled as stouf fville district secondary school celebrated its athletes coaches and volunteers at the annual athletic awards cere mony on wednesday night while the list of york region secondary schools athletic association yrssaa title- winning teams included the usual array of boys and girls volleyball and girls basketball squads there was a new addi tion to the winners circle this year the girls slopitch team under the direction of al piette and bob johnston won its first ever yrssaa crown this spring piette felt the team showed sufficient fire power at the plate to make it a threat to any high school girls team we are rated aa but the way these girls hit they could probably beat any high school team said piette all three boys volleyball teams took their yrssaa crowns as did the senior girls volleyball unit the midget girls waded into previously unknown territory by winning at the higher aaa level the junior and senior girls basket ball teams both recorded regional championships in cross country running the schools junior boys team took the team title helping the squad win the overall champi onship the boys fastball team was also victorious in the individual presenta tions fivesport athlete nicole bardell and runner sarah cliff were named cowinners of the outstanding senior female ath lete of the year award while don patten was named out standing senior male athlete of the year the outstanding junior female athlete nomination also ended up in a tie with alison crowder and danielle timms winning ian hazelwood was given the outstanding junior male award the jim rehill sportsman ship award went to jennifer cowley matt brillinger and christie henderson were male and female winners respec tively of the moral and physi cal improvement award luke anderson and andrea crothers were fitness chal lenge champions michelle gilroy and tom hammond received the athletic council awards team mvp awards were pre sented to the following ath letes cross country running sarah cliff chris weatherill field hockey jenn turner boys volleyball ian hazel- wood midget martin reesor- mcdowell junior mike green senior girls basketball ali son crowder midget nicole bardell junior andrea crothers senior boys basket ball mark meyer midget girls volleyball alison crow der danielle timms midget melissa gilroy junior leana milos senior badminton rebecca morrison junior jen mcgowan senior soccer stephanie hobbs most improved player girls slo- pitch melissa gilroy boys fastball paul koert ian ellis dan marujo dan mcneil award to boys fastball team member chosen the most dedi cated committed and most popular track chris lam- ont sarah cliff field john tamlin angie pugh throwing stephanie hobbs bryn epp was given a special award for his technical contri bution to the athletic program willis is a splash hit a stouffville octogenarian swam to two gold medals in the york region senior games com petition wednesday at the town pool adele willis was first in the 100yard predic tion swim and the 25yard sprint in the 65 and over class willis a resident of parkview vil lage is more than 80 years of age also in the winners circle in the games sec ond week were mary ann quinby and pat kring who won the gold in the contract bridge open doubles event tuesday at latcham hall the two who were competing against 38 duos are members of the silver jubilee bridge club winning the silver medal in wednesdays threekilometre prediction walk was stouf- fvilles jean smith of testa villa the victories gave stouffville residents four gold medals and a silver at the games which began may 29 elmer farthing and evelyn rae won the gold in the euchre progressive doubles event on opening day the games are to run through june 16 the final week will see events including lawn and carpet bowling bocci table tennis and darts the closing ceremonies and banquet are to be held on friday june 16 at noon at the maples of ballantrae with more than 200 participants and dignitaries expected to take part
