correspondent it was a pair of firsts for stouffville district secondary school teams at the recent york region secondary secondary athletic association girls volleyball finals the spartans senior girls volleyball team made history by win ning the yrssaa aa crown to become the first school girls vol leyball unit to compete in the ofsaa finals the midget spartans grabbed the title in their first ever yrssaa aaa championship after moving up from aa this sea son the senior spartans who left at noon tuesday for the ofsaa senior girls volleyball championship in stratford won all three sets played at the yrssaa finals at woodbridge hs feb 23 the spartans swept the host squad 151 156 the outlasted sutton dhs 158 1015 155 in a three game set in preliminary pool play the stouffville squad dumped sutton 159 156 in the finals the effort was helped by jen cowley and jen pare who divid ed the setting duties melissa austin christi henderson andrea crothers michelle gilroy and leana milos stood out defensively jean turchan and jen mcleod contributed as well spartans coach sheila coleman said the spartans will add junior spartans players nicole bardell and stehanie summerill for the ofsaa rep hockey team the meyers crew handed mississauga a 32 defeat in a recent metro league contest then came back to blank lea- side 30 in their next outing it was emily patriarche jacqui vankoughnet and lisa jacque scoring for stouffville in the win over mississauga assists went to jessica clayson 2 ashley martin theresa ella and karlee dud ley in the leaside contest and gillian apps added a sin- clayson netted a pair of goals gle jacqui earned an assist with julia summerhill picking up the shutout angies wins durham west tourney kari sandiford scored the only goal of the game from candice miller and lindsey reid to give the stouffville angies peewee girls rep team a 10 victory over barrie in the title game of the durham west tournament sun day it was the second shutout of the tournament for jennifer dupont as the angies outfit blanked the bluewater hawks 40 in the game before miller jenny deacon reid and mandy vandenberg scored in that contest assists went to miller and deacon the angies squad won all four games played at the competition starting with a 21 tri umph over durham west lighting sandiford notched both stouffville markers with assists going to michelle dulude and miller sandiford deacon and laura johnston found the range in angies 31 win over the oakville hornets in game two angies followed up their tournament suc cess by edging another barrie team 21 in their first provincial qualifier alison edward and melissa theoret scored for stouffville abbot robertson earn special honors sport notes bruce stapley two area residents were among 25 ontarians to be presented with a special achievement award for their contributions to amateur sport at the 1994 ontario sports awards dinner in toronto on feb 28 the awards which are the high est honors given volunteers who have dedicated at least 10 consec utive years to one of 81 sports rec ognized by the province went to siloams bob abbot and clare- monts michael robertson abbot a former coach with the stouffville stingers intermediate ladies softball team was recog nized for his ongoing efforts on behalf of softball in ontario and canada he is currently vice- chairman of softball ontario chairman of the national teams committee for softball canada and is past president of the ontario amateur softball associa tion he was team manager of the canadian squad which won the world junior mens fastball championships in new zealand in 1993 robertson the 52yearold opera tor of the high perspective hang gliding arid paragliding school in claremont has been an advocate of those sports for 25 years he is currently copresident of the ontario hang gliding and paragliding association and is an honorary director of the united states hang gliding association he was in charge of instructional standards for canada in 1979 and developed a teaching system for risk management for the sport his efforts resulted in insurance rates becoming much more reason able for hang gliders and ultra lite
