st tribune march 8 1995 ps letters ice rink plan should be scrapped in favor of swirnming pool dear editor at the whitchurch-stouf- fville council meeting of feb 28 i expressed my opposition to the building of a second ice rink for the fol lowing reasons 1 the town is now in the position of making the final payment on the debentures for the existing rink we taxpayers are now being asked to buy and maintain another rink in order that a relatively small select portion of our population may participate in their particular sport 2 this building would see only seasonal use however the taxpayers would be responsible for its yearround maintenance the fact that this build ings use is so specific cre ates a problem for any pos sible alternative user we only have to look at the difficulties surrounding the home show a few years ago 3- 1 also believe that the hockey and skating associa tions of our community have been very well accom modated at the public purse and that it is now time for other interests to be consid ered 4 personally i would like to see an indoor swimming pool as swimming is a pre ferred exercise additionally i believe such a pool would serve a far wider cross section of the communities of new market and markham i have noticed both abled- bodied and disadvantaged men and women of all ages enjoying themselves for these reasons i protest the construction of a new rink i urge all people who agree to contact their local councillor by mail or phone also attending council meetings when this matter is discussed would ensure that the councils decision would reflect the view of the majority chris tnrkin stouffville news of ice pad a shock to reader savage dear editor i must admit that i became apoplectic when i read in the weekender that the town is about to build another ice pad when was this decided why havent we read anything about this until now a few years ago a survey was done in whitchurch- stouffville to find out what next recreational facility most people wanted the answer was an indoor swimming pool this is the most logical answer our population is aging and is endeavoring to keep as fit as possible which helps our health care system we cant afford to join a fitness club the birth rate is declining i know children need to skate i love chil dren i have three of my own but as a parent i know you shouldnt give give give to children par ents deserve something too i have been a taxpayer for 30 years and this will be the third ice pad for young sters and adult skaters since i came here now its about time the rest of the population is considered im sure the million dol lars for an ice rink would not be enough for an indoor pool but the money could be put aside until we get enough to build one come on people are we going to sit idly by and let this happen the majority of the people want a pool speak up and let us have something that will benefit every person in whitchurchstouffville not just a portion of it kjjob stouffville
