personali ties who made news in whitchurchstouffville this year politicians community activists and others are just some of the people who made 1994 the good and the bad a milestone in many respects the profiles of this years newsmakers were written by kate gilderdale mike ruta and bruce stapley when jag bhaduria won the markham whitchurch- stouffville riding on oct 25 1993 he was like many mps who had been swept to victory with the liberal tide an unknown identifiable only by his party three months later he was at the centre of a nation wide story over hate letters he wrote four years ago to the toronto board of education bhaduria was bitter at not being promoted and wrote that superintendents at the board should be lined up against a wall and shot by massmurderer marc lepine he apologized in the house of commons stating that he was under a tremendous amount of stress in his professional and family life when the letters were writ ten but it was too late for bhaduria to save his reputation when it was revealed that he had presented misleading academic cre dentials to the liberal party the nowinfamous ll b int des ignation which bhaduria said represented his partial comple tion of a law degree the party abandoned him on jan 28 with media from across the country on his trail bhaduria arrived at the offices of the tribunes sister paper the markham economist and sun with executive assistant joanne dave to tell his story an amiable bhaduria said that he had never claimed he was a lawyer maintaining he had the right to use the desig nation to show he had begun taking the necessary courses in a long discourse bhadurias bitterness towards the toronto board of education was still evi dent he said he would not resign and promised to serve his constituents for the next four years a grassroots movement to force bhaduria to resign had no legal basis but mopped up what was left of his sta tus in the riding polls conducted by the tribune and the economist and sun showed residents had had enough of the rookie mp of the 505 ballots received by the tribune in response to the question should jag bhaduria resign there was not a single one supporting him his status as a member of parliament for the ruling government gone bhaduria has become the reactionary mp every so often a fax will arrive at the tribune office bearing his name immediately after the port perry bank robbery for example bhaduria sent a fax decrying the shootings and calling for stiffer penalties for guntoting crimi nals however he does not seek publicity on every occasion for example on nov 11 when he came to stouffville for remembrance day ceremonies bhaduria did not alert the local media fran sainsbury for the second year in a row fran sainsbury began the year urging her peers to come to the council table with a more positive attitude or risk dividing the town but dissension on council and a slew of controversies was to dog her during her last year as mayor it was the single greatest reason she was defeated in the november election sainsbury later said that some councillors were crowd pleasers had a separate agenda and put interest groups above their duties as members of council wellorganized ratepayers groups from vandorf and ballantrae attacked the town and sainsbury as mayor took the brunt of the criticism it was announced in early april that project 80 a police investigation into alleged municipal corruption was to include whitchurchstouffville while the investigation is ongoing nothing as yet has come of it but it further tarnished the towns image and by association sainsburs the first to admit that her last term was the most unpleasant sainsbury surprised some people by deciding to seek a fourth term she finished third in a fourhorse race and turned the mayors chair over to wayne emmerson sainsbury also began the year pressing for industrial growth at gormley and succeeded despite provincial and regional roadblocks with the town designated a slow- growth area by the province she said the added tax dol lars were needed sainsbury has plans to rejoin her real estate career and may even start a bed and breakfastantique shop out of her ninth line home she has vowed to keep a close eye on council and issues of concern to her former newmarket mayor ray twinney dead at age 59 by laurie watt metroland staff longtime newmarket mayor ray
