prepared press statement given to the tiibune during an interview in the church office wednesday york region police arrested macnaughton april 27 after complaints from two eight-year- old stouffville tary pay cut to help alleviate the towns financial problems ward 6 councillor ken prentice read off his surprising motion tuesday night calling for town department heads and directors of the 57employee corporation to willingly take a cut in pay town staff by and large are very fine individuals and most realize the finan cial difficulties the town is suffering prentice said he asked that council pre pare a memo to be circulated among top- paid employees to lobby the request council would then welcome a private meeting with a staff member to discuss voluntary proposals to reduce their salary or take time off without pay prentice suggested he added employees would not be pat ted on the back for taking a pay cut and those who refused would not be penal ized any offer by a staff member would not affect their performance appraisals either way he said finance director ed blackburn and building director bob bennett got up and left the meeting while public works director paul whitehouse and deputy clerk michele skinner remained this proposal would give staff an opportunity- for a voluntary proposal every other avenue is closed down prentice continued the towns chief staffers were given a pay hike approved in 1991 which raised some salaries this year as much as 7000 a year council of the day raised the salaries because a consultant study showed stouffvilles highskilled employees were earning less than most other municipalities of comparable size both ward 5 councillor bob ancheril and ward 1 councillor ivanka bradley said the idea had merit but refused to allow the motion to pass without notice although prentice couldnt get support to carry his motion majority council agreed to have it presented again at next weeks meeting for a vote tyacy kibble provincial project to improve main street from the west connecting link at the 10th line all the way to the 9th line the ministry of transporta tion mto is offering whitchurchstouffville the sub sidy over the next two years that would also transfer responsibility of the road to the town mto officials inspected the connecting link from the 10th line from main street north to hemlock drive and confirmed the need to resurface and repair deteriorating sec tions the towns share could soar as high as 644000 if landscaping and sidewalk con struction is undertaken hut staff is recommending a scaled- down version totalling about 322000 the project which is expected to take two years to complete will cost the town 95500 this year to repair and resurface the 9th to the 10th line reconstruct the 10th line north to an urban crosssection and to relocate utilities in 1994 the towns costs will cover the remaining 226000 to com plete the project officials are anxious to give mto their approval or risk losing the sub sidy to another community this is a generous deal from the province but it wont be out there for long said ward 6 councillor ken prentice but mayor fran sainsbury said she wanted it made clear that the town proceed only if mto commits to do the second half of the job but ward 2 councillor stephen bellerby said the expenditure is not high on a list of taxpayer priorities
