st rt 6 aailiwacyvishu ct ltyii sat jnsfi 1 ffl weekendjerifebrary27r police association says more officers are needed in york york regional police is at least 50 officers short charges union leader paul baily the force has been operating under a hiring freeze since june 1990 while the population of york region jumped 18 per cent in the last three years baily said in 1994 the force will be taking over patrol of some roads now overseen by ontario provincial police such as hwy 7 and hwy 11 tm not saying officers are going to die but were concerned with the potential danger when we inherit these roads baily said he cited opp statistics that show 1253 reportable accidents occurred on hwy 7 and 573 on hwy 11 in 1992 these are crashes that regional police will be responding to next year and the opp suggested the force will need a minimum of 14 more cruisers and 30 officers baily said for every 768 people there is one police officer a drop of nine per cent since 1990 when the ratio was one officer for every 702 citizens our guys can only do so much we need more manpower said baily adding the current complement of 680 officers will not sub sidize any hiring through a drop in pay york region is not broke by any stretch of the imagination the first draft of the 1993 regional budget of 117 million was presented last week with 59 million set aside for the police ser vices board this is a 41 per cent increase over last year we all appreciate what the police and fire services do but theres not a bottomless pit of money in the budget said region al councillor gord landon snow removal a problem the snowiest winter for nine years is so far as much a removal problem as a budget problem said the towns public works direc tor paul whitehouse in other years weve had less snow but more freezing rain and black ice so bad conditions are still out there one way and anoth er and that means crews are always busy salting and sanding this year the removal component is the difference we have to get it removed from main street which means coming in at odd hours when there is no traffic or parked cars to haul it away while the town dumps the excess white stuff in the works yard following big storms in december we ran out of room and used the parking area across from latcham hall for stockpiling said whitehouse patrols are out seven days a week during the winter depending on conditions we are a bedroom community so we try and get out early in the morning prior to people going to work this year the popularity of the towns snow clearance program for seniors and physically disabled residents has proved very pop ular said whitehouse the york region board of education ofep continuing education department registration for adult english as a second language classes at
