when a special rail car used to come up from toronto loaded with skiers who would traverse the slopes just next to what is now ski dagmar the claremont area ski resort dagmars marketing manager steve dunn said theyd make the journey in what was called the dagmar car back in the late 1940s and early 50s back before there was a road leading to the ski facility the eager skiing enthusiasts would spend the day schussing back and forth on their wooden skis using a rope tow powered by the engine of an old pick up truck to get them to the top of the hill the same truck would be utilized for field duty in summertime dunn said that only recently someone at the resort came across a box of old photographs capturing forever the prejet lift days those who have been around the resort awhile like owner gabor marton were bathing themselves in nostalgia as they relived the old memories today some 40 years later things have changed drastically in the world of skiing and while theyre still not likely to start making comparisons between whistler and the natural terrain in these parts dagmar and the relatively new kid on the block lakeridge resort are making the most of the modest physical attributes with which they have been endowed dagmar and lakeridge continue to work a little harder at attracting skiers from the local environs as well as from the entire greater sport notes toronto area both have ample runs and lifts that are up to standards along with snow making equipment and lighting that allow them to take full advantage of what can be short season and these facilities arent just for beginners lakeridge area manager rick werner said his resort boasts a 300foot vertical drop just 15 feet shy of that offered by some of the more popular barrie area resorts werner told me the other day that the demand is there because people are looking at gas prices and the amount of time required to get to the better known ski havens of southern ontario both dagmar and lakeridge offer half day or hourly passes to make it even more attractive to locals and both resorts are future oriented not content to sit back and coast dagmar will undergo a massive expansion next summer in an attempt to become a year round operation officials plan to introduce mountain biking and hiking along with trail rides on horses beach volleyball and a wading pond with a little waterfall dunn said the idea is to reach out to both the public and the corporate market the resort already offers wedding packages in summertime and the next step will carry things several steps further dunn said its a matter of giving- the people what they want in tough economic times its a sign of the times he said were more than just a ski resort well do whatever it takes to get the people out here as for the people at lakeridge the future also includes an aggressive approach werner said there are plans in place to double the size of the resorts chalet in two years adding a whole new second level two new lifts are also on the drawing board we plan to expand as the need increases said werner its a long way from the days of rail cars and rope tows- i i si i i
