figure skating clubs interclub competition trials on monday stouffville fitness resort to accept male members in new year the stouffville fitness resort a women only club since opening in 1991 will open its doors to men in the new year resort owners frieder schuemer and denise forgie have announced the new policy wont change the overall approach in effect since the centre first opened from the beginning we worked to create a healthy environ ment that is safe and promotes fitness in a noncompetitive set ting a friendly place with a touch of heart it will be extended to embrace a larger community said a press release the owners said the difficult economy had made it hard to build up the resorts membership by expanding membership to include males it will become possible to offer the range of programs desired by members all classes will become coed said the owners with special facili ties connected to locker rooms to be shared on an alternating basis an additional change room is to be built and plans also include expanding the exercise equipment and increasing the number of classes interested people should call the resort at 6423488 or visit dur ing open hours angies peewees blank scarborough katie sandiford and lindsay rowe each had a goal and an assist to lead the angies peewee girls rep hockey team to a 40 win over scarborough in an exhibition game last weekend ruth ann gairdner and kari rumble also scored for angies christine de wulf lianne foti and kelly obrien had assists the peewees along with four other stouffville girls teams will be competing in the mississauga christmas tournament this weekend the stouffville novice stars dean myers atoms action signs bantams and angies midgets will also take part in the compe tition dagmar gets ready for another winter ski season bruce stapley correspondent ski dagmar is heading into its 30th year of operation hoping for a repeat of the 199293 sea son the snow making equipment has already started building up a base at the local alpine and cross country facility all thats needed now is a helping hand from mother nature revealed the resorts marketing manager steve dunn weve been making snow so theres some on the ground now said dunn were hoping to open this saturday dec 11 so we are looking for all this rain weve been having to turn to snow dunn said ski resort operators everywhere are still talking about the generous snow falls which got last years ski season off to such a flying start the owner of dagmar gabor marton said he hasnt had a beginning like last year since hes been in business- we had so much snow so early we were able to open the whole resort on the very first day last year and thats very unusual the resort ended up with an impressive total of 300000 skiers for the season and mem berships are up for the coming season said dunn dagmar will once again be offering 15 runs this season the lineup includes three triple chairs a quad chair two tbars and a pair of rope tows also back will be the half pipe for snow boarders for cross country enthusiasts the trails have been expanded for 199394 there are now 600 acres dedi cated to the cross country por tion of the resort with new trails being added and existing ones widened dagmar remains one of the few ski operations in ontario with snow making equipment photosjoerd witteveen with the arrival of cold weather steve dunn checks the snow coming out of the snow making machine at the dagmar ski slopes on its cross country facilities dunn said the resort will con tinue to focus on the family we cater to beginners and intermediates but we have something for advanced skiers too for instance bomber one of our steeper runs has moguls near the top weve really got something for every member of the family once again night skiing is scheduled to take place every day but sunday when the resort will close at 6 pm dag mar will also be open christmas day dagmars ski school director paul gallagher boasted 30000 participants in his wide range of classes last season including bus loads of students from area schools the program begins with club skiwi which includes tots from three to five years of age the little ones ski for two hours on weekends for a period of nine weeks dunn noted the program is one of the most pop ular offered by the resort its a huge success they learn to ski without knowing it there are balls and hoops and obstacles to ski around its been going on for a few years now and its almost all booked up already dagmar also offers a night les son program for families adult classes a weekend program and christmas and march break camps for kids and teens the first major event of the season is slated for dec 18 when the resort will be opened for free of charge its an early christmas pre sent to the skiers said dunn the day is to be iii support of the ronald mcdonald chil drens charities of canada and skiers will be encouraged to donate a few dollars to the cause ronald mcdonald will be here as will lucy laroche who is a canada cup silver medalist skier who has achieved impres sive results on the international ski scene laroche will also be part of a channel 57 breakfast televi sion program to be done live at dagmar the morning of dec 17 ski dagmar is located at 1220 lake ridge rd durham 23 near claremont lakeridge is ready to open slopes this weekend lakeridge resort is turning on the lights and pouring on the snow as it prepares to begin its fifth season this weekend the progressive local ski facility has added three new runs bringing the overall total to 17 all of which are lit for night skiing a third quad chair has been installed with another four seat lift extended to make for several longer runs the resort boasts a state of the art half pipe for snow boarders along with a snow boarding fun park which includes jumps slides and obstacle courses the concept which was introduced last winter was the first of its kind in ontario according to resort officials to guarantee favourable conditions even in the absence of natural snow lakeridge has acquired a new snow making pump along with the addi tion of several new snow making guns this will serve to extend the capacity of the resorts snow making potential lakeridge area manager rick werner believes that snow making is the secret to success in a cli mate which can be unpredictable in its natural snowfall show making is the key factor wern er told the tribune wednesday weve got snow making equipment on all our runs so we can start it up with a few good cold spells that plus the fact we have 100percent lighting puts us in a good position werner said the snow making equipment was brought out three weeks ago and that unless the rain returns a few runs would be open sometime this weekend he would love nothing better however than to see a natural snowfall to get people thinking ski ing last year with all the snow we had early in the season it made for a good start it gets
