36 welfare rolls up 41 in york region more than 8600 unemployed york region residents cashed welfare cheques in october a 41 per cent increase from the same peri od last year yorks community services department this week reported 8612 people or nearly three per cent of yorks popula tion cashed a welfare cheque in october up from septembers figures of 8454 or 22 per cent of the population and up dramatically from october 1991 with 6111 cases f the region paid out more than 77 mil lion to pay welfare to its unemployed resi dents up from 59 million in september the number one reason given by nearly 4000 people was inability to find regular employment about 570 people said they heeded welfare because their unemploy ment insurance benefits ran out provincial taxpayers dished out 55 million in october to allow their unemployed neighbors the social assistance monthly cheques jl104ndm sainsbury bellerby to remain on board officials reverse decision to leave lake board tracy kibble staff reporter a decision made in the heat of the moment thats what apparently hap pened several weeks ago when ward 2 councillor stephen bellerby and mayor fran sainsbury resigned their seats from the towns newlyformed kettle lakes advisory board klab tuesday night however the officials decided to repeal their earlier decision and remain on the board both officials said they resolved several controversial issues that have been plaguing the boards progress and have decided to remain at their posts bellerby and sainsbury threw in the towel on the board nov 17 after hearing com plaints from about 40 lake- front property owners at mus- no boat ban says mnr boating on musselman lake is a traditional activity which could be regulated but not banned states the ministry of natural resources in areas where a safety prob lem exists we try to regulate the aqtixity rather than eliminate it the only exception to this would v be where all parties agree to a total ban states an mnr letter obtained by the tribune this week ministry mnr officials say boating restrictions are normal ly placed into regulations under the canada shipping act for safety reasons not environmen tal concerns environmental issues may be see page 3 selman lake regarding a sum mer survey lake front residents had accused klab of being biased towards a boat ban and com plained they werent included in a survey which stated 60 per cent of lake residents approved of a ban the two officials denied push ing for a ban and said the group was investigating con cerns as a public service and had initiated the survey as a way for residents to air their environmental concerns after the session ended how ever sainsbury requested klab be dismantled as of jan 1993 stating the residents wouldnt be happy no matter what was done bellerby said this week he denies ever wanting klab to fold but insists his intentions to investigate a boat ban were dragged through the mud he agrees it wouldnt be sen sible to initiate a boat ban nor would it be within councils jurisdiction but said the issue had to come up in order to make that decision i wanted to find out if this kind of boat ban talk was sen sible its not bellerby said and ward 5 councillor bob ancheril said he was surprised you considered to disband the group just because people dis agree with you sainsbury chastised those officials who offered no support of klabs position during the heated nov 17 meeting if council wants this group you must support this group she said we will proceed onward and hope there will not be quite so much disagreement just because we cost and study pro jects doesnt mean we will implement them but we have to do the homework first sainsbury added vi i i i i 1
