p12tribune0ct0ber 141992 st stouffville town spurs bow out its all over for the stouffville town spurs mens soccer team the spurs who flirted with a playoff spot in the newmarket and district soccer leagues second division for most of the season bowed out with a 50 loss to alliston united in their last game of the season last saturday the spurs finished the year in fifth place with 19 points three points behind the allis ton squad which captured the fourth and final playoff posi tion bayview united finished in first place the loss to alliston was a dis appointing finish to a season which saw the spurs put together an 11 game unbeaten string at one point the stouffville team was forced to play the final month of the season without seven front line players who had returned to college spurs co- coach alfons rubbens conceded the team would have its hands full even if it had made the playoffs with so many regulars out of the lineup it made it difficult in the final weeks with so many key players gone said rubbens it probably would have been a one game playoff for us if we had made it because the other teams are at full strength despite the setback rubbens considered the season a suc cess overall i think it was a better season than last year we played better soccer said rubbens boyds atoms start strong three wins two ties and a single defeat thats the record of the stouf upincludes outfits at the senior bantam pee wee and novice levels the novice team is the first ever for the local association the house league has gone from four to five teams with each team having stouffville bowling and stouffville kinsmen house league play began last wednesday at the rec centre new coach hopes to boost sdss track team with the track firmly in place at stouffville district sec ondary school all that remains is for the school to rebuild its track and field team so it can once again become a power in york region to this end the schools new- comer coach larry bobbett is hoping to lead prospective track athletes through a year long training program to make sure they are ready to compete come spring bobbett is helping dave con- nell coach the schools cross country running team this fall with stamina and determina tion the prime prerequisites of a successful cross country ath lete the coaching duo is looking to develop some competitive track and field hopefuls as the team tackles hills valleys and steep slopes ironically the sdss cross country team was dethroned as york region champs during the time it took to build the track with coach connell all tied up with the ongoing project he didnt have the time to give to sport notes s tap vvvvvvvv4vvvavvv the cross country squad consequently the usually strong sdss team hasnt won the regional title since 1989 last year they climbed back up to second place overall with the sdss midget unit winning its division as the midgets continue to excel it should be just a matter of time before the entire team reflects their 1991 success the sdss crew got off to a good start this season as the midgets were second out of 23 teams at the east york mud run last wednesday sdss midget runner scott murray finished ninth out of 174 racers sdss junior runner sarah cliff was eighth in a 117girl field midget girl sarah chewins came 21st out of 87 competitors chris lamont luke anderson david robin son heather lemottee james butcher and brent fogal also ran well for the school connell reported that the team looked good against the other york schools at the east york event but that more prac tice time was needed to reach peak condition especially for the female runners the team is now gearing up for the regional championships which take place at the boyd conservation area oct 21 when the cross country sea son wraps up bobbett intends to take the team members who are not involved in other school sports and get them into the weight room and into other forms of indoor training in preparation for the spring track season he is hoping to take some of his athletes to the toronto star maple leaf indoor games as well as to an indoor meet in hamilton redwings defeat nordiques lionel villeneuve netted a hat trick and ron martyn and john hickman added solo markers as the gallo real estate red wings defeated the spring lakes golf nordiques 5- 3 oct 4 for their first win of the stouffville amateur hockey league season al mcnaught rich hughes and robert smith had the nords goals matt hawkins fired a pair with charles ramsay connect ing as well to enable the vil lage landscaping capitals to run their season record to four wins and no losses with a 31 triumph over the stomark rental kings wayne smith scored the lone kings goal meanwhile the rand pools maple leafs handed the cana dian tire black hawks their first defeat of the season by a 30 count larry penny earned the shutout for the leafs while phil pirie bob nichols and terry weatherill provided the scoring bill thornhill and bruce mehaffey each lit the lamp twice and wayne mcmann had a single score as the occasions catering blues downed the smurthwaite heating bruins 5i don lloyd counted the bruins goal randy osborne was unbeat able in the gr flooring jets goal as the jets blanked the as construction flames 50 kevin mcguckin paced the jets win with two goals phil redshaw and kelly burrows also found the range it was john
