leyball team began its york region title defence with a sweep in league play and a trip to the finals in a seasonopening tournament the spartans went the short route in match ups with denison and aurora in mondays league opener in newmarket taking each set in two straight games the aa rated stouffville squad made it all the way to the championship round at saturdays tour nament at unionville hs bowing 159 1512 to aaa rated dunbarton hs in the final the sdss crew had defeated william lyon mackenzie hs 1512 15- 10 in the semifinals the spartans play at home to huron heights ss and dr g w william ss this coming wednes day sept 30 afternoon at the sdss gym uxbridge skaters perform saturday twentyfour members of the uxbridge skating club usc will perform at the annual bursary show at the granite club in toron to this saturday the usc skaters who are from junior to senior level will be part of a show that is to include singles and pair skaters from the canadian world team the granite club perfor mance begins at 430 pm with a second show sched uled for two pm sunday at north york centennial arena the usc is planning to hold a bake sale at its fall test saturday october 3 at the swim club wednesday marianne limpert far right who swam at this years olympics was a sur prise guest at the banquet olympian addresses uxbridge swim club bruce stapley correspondent youve got to make a lot of sacrifices if you hope to make it to the top in the world of competitive swimming that was the message delivered by canadian olympic swimmer marianne limpert at the uxbridge swim club usc banquet wednesday night at the music hall eimpert who placed sixth in the 200metre individual medley event in barcelona last month said she had no social life for six months before this years olympic games but the price was more than worth it added limpert who was forced to overcome a shoulder injury on her way to this years olympics dont quit always perse vere said limpert who won two gold medals at the cana da games in saskatoon in 1989 but make sure its always fun limpert attended the ban quet as the unexpected guest of special speaker byron macdonald macdonald is a former olympic level swim mer who finished sixth in the 100m butterfly at the 1972 games in which mark spytz of the united states dominat ed he was a gold medalist at the 1970 commonwealth games macdonald is coach of the university of varsity swim team he also coaches limpert and marcel gery who swam with the bronze medal winning canadian medley relay team at barcelona macdonald who broadcast ed swim events at the barcelona olympics told usc members that competi tive swimming was some thing they could take with them anywhere you can have fun at swim ming wherever you are said macdonald its a great sport theres a commitment there but it pays off in the long run referring to limperts com petitive spirit macdonald told club swimmers not to be afraid to win theres noth ing wrong with striving to do your best every time you hit the water limpert and macdonald who both live in toronto stayed to autograph swim club members team pictures after the banquet thirteen usc members were honored for their achievements in the 199192 season marsha clouthier was rec ognized for winning the 200- m butterfly event at the canadian youth nationals melissa thomas heather lee melanie bryon and clouthier all won provincial championships thomas in the 200m backstroke lee in the 100 and 200m back stroke and the 200m med ley bryon in the 200 and 400m freestyle and clouthi er in the 100 and 200m fly and the 400 medley others honored for making it to the top 50 in canada in their age level were brett clouthier gillian bryon judy koonstra kelly bryon laura lee krista wasylenky matthew slater sandy mark and mike wasylenky usc head coach terry bryon was also acknowl edged for his contribution to the club the swim club begins prac tices for the upcoming season this weekend in the newly renovated uxpool
