st tribune april 15 1992 p15 stouffville angies girls win ontario hockey title chalk up another provincial level hockey title for stoufiville the angies senior womens hockey team overcame their north metro womens league rival toronto hawks 43 in the championship contest of the ontario womens hockey asso ciation owha finals held in brantford over the weekend the angies squad was one of three stouffville girls outfits to contest provincial crowns on the weekend the ringwood variety and video intermedi ates earned the silver medal in the owha intermediate c tournament in mississauga while the action signs ban tams came up empty in the bantam b flight joy puffet emerged as the offensive star in angies cham pionship victory over the hawks scoring twice to help her team make up for being ousted from the league playoffs by the hawks last month allison lowery and denise coppins had the other angies goals with michelle mudie earning three assists to go with single set ups by sylvia clay- don and cathy mayo the angies ladies won all four games played in the eight team showdow tourney they started off with a 62 defeat of ancaster friday with mudie and carol baetz each netting a pair of goals puffet and mayo added solo markers while assists were picked up by claydon 3 mayo 2 lowery 2 and coppins the stouffville crew skated to a 50 whitewash victory over penetang saturday with goal- tender denise vick picking up the shutout claydon and mudie each scored twice to go with a single by lowery assists went to mudie 3 claydon 2 puffet baetz and tracy cumming in sunday mornings semifi team the edwards murphy ban tam clippers were given a few pointers by the cream of the stouffville hockey crop at the rec centre saturday night the omha a champion clippers who are off to pre ston to contest the ontario hockey federation all ontario bantam a champi onship this weekend fell 84 to a team made up of some of the best players from the stouffville intermediate hock ey league the intermediate squad which included former ameri can hockey league star wes jarvis extoronto maple leaf bill root and one time college star doug todd proved too seasoned for the younger bants thegame was part of a dou ble header fundraiser for the edwards murphy outfit the other contest saw the cheffero classics blank the betz pools clippers 20 in a battle of the towns oldtimer squads the bantams got a pair of goals from david giancoulos with john mckinnon and roger mcmann adding sin gles assists came from mck innon 3 geoff smith 3 and giancoulos the bantams will practise twice this week before head ing to preston friday to take on the champions of the other three ontario hockey associa tions the clippers then practise friday afternoon in hespeler where they will take on the mthl titlist meadowvale team at 9 pm the stouffville boys face off against the host outfit satur day at 1 pm before finishing out the preliminary round robin with a game against kapuskasing the northern ontario hockey association entry at 7 pm saturday night the third and fourth place teams will play for the bronze medal sunday at 1 pm with the championship match set for 3 pm bantams coach bob mckin non while expressing concern that his team had been idle for two weeks felt his charges would be ready the only thing im worried about is that we havent played a game in two weeks said mckinnon but the boys are excited about it theyll just have to put on their game faces im confident well do quite well the clippers will probably be without the services of star centre ryan burkholder who has mononucleosis defence- man geoff smith a former centre will be moved back to his old position for the tourna ment the competition is to take place at the hespeler memori- al arena 640 ellis rd in cambridge to get to the arena exit north from hwy 401 at hwy 24 franklin blvd track and field athletes gear up for home stretch in school sports the athletes at stouffville district secondary school are entering the home stretch as the final sports session of the school year gets underway and with the towns new track and field complex all fin ished up this spring will mark the first time the schools track team hasever had a proper facility on which to train and compete in all there are no less than seven meets scheduled for the new outdoor playground including public school meets sport notes jasat relay meet kicks things off may 5 according to sdss boys phys ed chief dave connell the relay event could attract between 500 and 1000 competitors with student athletes coming from as far as stayner and burling ton trafalgar to participate metre event and a 400-200-200- 800m medley there are to be 64 races in all with boy boys and girls heats at the midget junior and senior levels sdss track coach scott croucher reports there have been 55 to 60 enthusiastic track and field athletes coming out to practise since just after march break with 35 to 40 of those being midget aged athletes hes predicting a strong future for the school in that sport croucher will be assisted by rick dewell sandy appleby and 1964 olympic silver medal- ia rim rvattia ft- t york university indoor track complex to work out last thurs day and got to meet canadian track star ben johnson connell is looking for an impressive season from second year midget andrea crothers who is the daughter of bill crothers andrea sprinted to a 10th place finish in the 800m race at the ofsaa all ontario meet in sudbury last june crothers has already been on three championship teams this school year with the girls vol- york title last fall jason whitelaw another promising midget is expected to pick up where he left off as a member of the schools york and dyssa durham york championship midget boys cross country team in the fall whitelaw was also on the sdss midget volleyball team which won the york crown in novem ber kelly forsythe who placed second in the javelin event at the ofsaa regional meet
