eligible for canadian championships melanie bryon has succeeded in com ing the first uxbridge swim club usc member ever to record a national quali- fyingtime ijvielanie the 14 year old daughter of usc head coach terry bryon achieved the feat at the eastern cup eastern canadian championships at sher- brooke quebec last weekend the uxbridge secondary school stu dent earned two silver medals at the senior ievel meet placing second in both the 100 and 200 metre breast stroke events bryon found herself in seventh and eight place after the preliminariesbut catapulted herself into second spot in both categories withher performances in the finals bryons mother mary a coach with the uxbridge club said it was a matter of putting it all together when it counted we knew she hadnt swam up to her potential in the preliminaries said mary but she turned a few heads including her owhi in the finals both bryons silver medal times were under the national qualifying times makingher eligible for the canadian national championships to be held this summer mary bryon said the club might have had a second national time swimmer at the meet but that mike wasylenky had been slowed down by a bout with the flu she said her husband terry bryon had been saying it was inevitable that the five year old club would eventually produce a national qualifier and that there would likely be more to come its now just a matter of time before the club has more national qualifiers im sure there will be a few more before this season ends melanie also placed in the 200 400 and 800 metre free style events record ing personal best times in all five cate gories in which she competed in all 12 usc members competed at the meet which included swimmers from ontario quebec and the mar- itimes all swimmers participating in the melanie bryon exits the pool in sher- brooke quebec after last weekends eastern canadian championships bry ons times were up to national qualify ing standards and she is now eligible for the canadian championships event had qualified by posting times faster than their provincial time stan dards photosteve somerville members of the uxbridge skating club recently won the past 10 years the uxbridge skat ing club has brought home the boundy trophy at the pineridge interclub competi tion the local outfit snuck past its nearest competitor edging the oshawa figure skating club by just two points at the y two day event held in port hope recently the uxbridge club earned four first place medals at the meet jonathan ball finished on top in the beginner mens category clinton paisley was first in the prehminary mens final tiffani foster won in the senior ladies field and emily ahlgren and clinton paisley prevailed in the preliminary dance seconds were earned by chris moynes preliminary men larsahlgren pre-juve- nile men lee pilkington senior ladies brooke batten and ryan davies preliminary dance and victoria reinhardt and lars ahlgren junior bronze dance secondary school uss tigers senior boys bas ketball team limped into the regional lossaa semifinals with a 7864 win oyer port perry hs at the uss gym wednesday the tigers with just four healthy starters got a 26 point effort from jason eddy to lead the way steve pilkey went to the hoop for a season high 19 points while aaron massey was good for another 15 points with starters greg ferraro ankle injury blake palmer cold and darryl stevenson ankle turn at less than full strength the tigers were per forming under their potential according to coach tim huleatt having just five players we had to run a lax defence because we didnt want to run into foul trouble said huleatt the tigers who led 3820 at the half were still able to dom inate the boards said huleatt which resulted in many inside baskets for his team we were a taller team so we could beat them in close and we had worked on passing and inside shooting at practice ear lier in the week and it seemed to pay off added huleatt however the coach said the tigers would have to play an improved game if they hoped to beat brock hs in the lossa semi final which was to have been played yesterday hopeful cur injured players
