alive and welll at sdss what does the recently complet ed championship boys volleyball season at stouffville district sec ondary school have in common with the schools less than distin guished current boys basketball campaign the answer is simple enthusias tic coaches and a bunch of game young men neither of whom are so driven as to measure progress only in terms of scoring more points than the other guys with the schools perennial emphasis on volleyball as attested to by the endless titles listed on the pennants on the gym walls the basketball program has been forced to play second fiddle the past decade or so after all its hard for coaches to be scouring the school for cage tal ent then helping the hoopsters prep for the upcoming battles of the boards when they are already giving up so much of their spare time guiding the volleyball squads through regional and provincial championship finals in fact senior spartans basket ballvolleyball coach jim fletcher is balancing both sports these days his volleyball crew just recently returned emptyhanded from the allontario ofsaa tournament in niagara falls its the fourth straight year fletchs boys have made the trek to the big competi tion no mean feat but hes not happy to rest on his laurels hes already planning next years assault he along with several of his returning big guns will be attend ing a high level volleyball camp this summer it seems this years repeat champions from chatham- kent have inspired fletch and his crew and they are more deter mined than ever to reach for the top after a less than astounding show of strength this time around fletch is confident that with todd snooks jason cowan and tim lavell who will be back from his switzerland school exchange he will have the making of a provincial championship team sport notes but in the meantime he is bully on basketball despite a first half scheduling set up which has seen all three doublea ranked spartan squads consistently bounced around by schools with triplea ranking however that will all change after christmas said fletcher thats when the divisions are re aligned with an eye towards parity and the trio of sdss teams will then be up against their own ilk in eying the schools talent he said the midgets are being handled expertly by coaches ken colter and andy cherkas everyone is being given a chance to strut their stuff in the early going with an eye towards send ing out the best lineup when the team goes against beatable oppo nents in the new year the midgets are disciplined and they show a lot of hustle said fletcher he begins to drool when he talks about the junior spartans with crackerjack coach rusty hick at the helm and the likes of jermain franklin the two jasons reesor and cowan and andy frew on board this is the crew to watch according to fletcher the juniors are hungry and they have a strong potential for this years playoffs where they will face only doublea schools he said fletcher realizes his seniors are probably in the deepest hole of all three teams due to a lack of expe rience but he commends the play of the entire squad particularly brian snooks jon cowley and fred klein they all hustle he said and they are getting some respect after a recent road loss to milliken mills in which snooks went to the hoop for 22 points several of the markham schools junior players came out of the stands to shake snooks hand fletcher just beams at the memory yes basketball is alive and well at sdss and its certainly a credit to both the players and their men tors dave smart who is perhaps the most reliable media relations per son this town has ever known has asked me to give a big cheer to david gatto at the stouffville pizza pizza outlet it seems gatto came up with 750 to make the recent pee wee clippers tournament fly not to mention the hats and t- shirts the outlet provided for the winning teams and mvps and the pizza warming oven lent to the snack bar to look after the pizzas which were sent over at discount prices it was the second year in a row that gatto had proved so gracious
