reporter m local mp bill attewell is urging the prime minister to end the national postal strike attewell marldiahtvvtiitchurch- stouffville mp has written to the prime ministers office asking par- i liament be- recalled to endthe- strike r he is also asking for legislation declaring postal service an essen tial service be introduced that would render any strikes in the future illegal he explained fville finally opened plans to open the site at 82 sandi- ford dr were delayed according to canada post information resi dents should have been able to pickup their mail and government cheques at the vacant storage unit last thursday but like so many other temporary depots across the greater toronto area it never opened it wasnt until friday morning that some mail arrived however there was still an air of mayhem 4nd disappoint among some local residents looking for mail the depot was staffed with sever al postal employees from the ottawa head office large broken boxes were being used as make shift tables while work- went on to connect electrical power within the premises there were no long lines or pick- eters outside the unit yet many walked away empty handed although the facility is meant to carry all personal mail only pen sion cheques were available friday seyentyeightyearold doug bacon was at the depot friday morning its an inconvenience because i dont drive much he said but there was no hassle at all people were friendly bacon came expecting to stand and wait in 30 degree weather for his cheque others like darlene tustiri was expecting a cool wel come from postal union picketers wheftshe arrived at the depot she was so apprehensive about coming she arranged to come with a friend while relieved by amicable sur roundings tustin was disappointed to hear her unemployment cheque was not yet available theres nothing i can do she remarked fm more than a little upset with a mortgage due and other bills to pay her cheque is about a week and a half overdue tustin has to wait at least 10 days before canada employment may help like others who left the depot without mail friday tustin will have to come back and try again but those staffing the facility didnt know when any other mail was expected v mail pickup centres are sup posed to be open from mondayto saturday 8 arh to 8 pm school is iig once again residents of whitchurch- stouffville are
