ers furious this is crazy said pam mccracken who was walking the picket line thursday morning in front of one of two temporary postal outlets in the wooctbine and 14th ave area they canada post could have put all the money time and effort theyve spent on this thing into negotiating with us this just isnt necessary theyre not negotiating in good faith mccracken is a letter carrier from the willowdale postal station and she and other canadian union of postal workers cupw mem bers have been maintaining a picket line in the area since tuesday night it was on tuesday that the union discovered canada post had rented the buildings to use as temporary mail sorting warehouses employ ees being used to sort the mail at the site are replacement workers scabs as are the truck drivers delivering mail to the sites said mccracken the site at 7780 woodbine ave frazer fulton right unit supervisor for canada posts unionviile postal station informs elsa and gordon burnweli of unionviile centre that their pension cheques are not in yet photosteve somerville fulton said the station has been set up since early thursday morning and is ready to put out the cheques as soon as they arrive has been established as one of the locations for seniors to pick up pen sion cheques however as of 330 pm thursday the warehouse was empty and a supervisor said he had markham station stormed violence erupted at a markham mail sorting station wednesday six days after the canadian union of postal workers began a rotating strike campaign angry union members stormed a markham- mail sorting station on woodbine ave at 14th ave early wednesday morning wreaking havoc inside the building and in the parking lot up to 60 striking workers kicked through a glass door at the tempo rary site rented by canada post as a temporary large volume mail room temporary employees working inside were harassed by the irate crowd and fled the building they intimidated and threat ened the 10 people inside york regional police spokesperson sgt norn miles said adding a security guard stationed inside the plant was not harmed a truck driver forced from his rig in the parking lot was threat ened by a striker waving a two-by- four piece of wood two tractor trailers were trashed and a fire was ignited in the park- ing lot an estimated 2500 dam age was done to the building and vehicles when police arrived at the scene strikers pulledback to the property line and formed a picket line no identifiable suspects were pointed out to police and no one was arrested there was no physical violence towards people the doing it to make us look bad a spokesperson for canada post in ottawa jean maurice filion said the temporary centres were established to move the mail we thought it would have been easier to move the mail out of the plants it was especially bad in the toronto area he said the system of temporary pick up centres worked fairly well in the rest of the country and denied that the pension cheques were being used as a bargaining tool we tried to get the cheques to the distribution centres he said it was an unfortunate situation and were sorry mccracken said the only people being allowed through the picket lines are pensioners trying to col lect tlusir cheques were not say ing no to pension cheques its the the warehouse at woodbine and 14th ave rented to be used as a temporary mail sorting area a week ago friday has been a hard one for the union and postal work ers have been taking a lot of criti cism from the media and members of the general public attewell urges government to end strike bill attewell mp for markham whitchurchstouffville has urged prime minister brian mulroney and harvie andre house leader and minister responsible for canada post to recall parliament to end the cur rent postal strike attewell said many constituents have told him recently that they want the government to take action immediately seniors are concerned about receiving their pension cheques small business owners are alarmed at the negative impact the postal strike will have on their cash flow he said he said he would like to see legislation declaring the postal service as essential so as to airport is clcied in that event an estimated 60 mil lion win be lost to the local economy annually according to town officials inspection of a job site by labor ministry officials the officials found workers installing a floor on the fifth storey of a building were not wearing safety belts harnesses or helmets and that guard rails had not been built around uncovered openings in floors the saks case is the latest in a series of prosecutions handed down by the courts under tougher provisions intro duced last year to the occupational health and safety act we are not taking these infractions
