have a story to tell actually many stories as was evidenced by the response we received from our summerfiction contest- in just three weeks we managed to receive 18 stories ofvarying lengths and topics in thexomihg weeks we will be running these stories in their entirety there are tales of love and friendship a christmas story mys teries and sagas of suspense and even several stories spun for children we have entries from gedar val ley sandford uxbridge stouf fville claremont goodwood gormleyand mount albert we will be running the works all by local writers as space permits and at the conclusion our panel of judges will be picking the best of the bunch the grand prize winner will be given a voucher from stonehouse travel for 400 toward a trip of their choice it could be a weekend away or it could be put toward the dream trip of a lifetime in any event the response has been phenomenal on speaking with some of the writers i found that the prize was not as important as the opportunity to be published for a budding writer seeing work in print can be the impetus to con tinue writing after a host of rejec tion slips minute willli a n d re w ma i r stouffville tribune helps to build confidence as well as pro viding a forum for their work the response to the contest took me by surprise it never dawned on me that there were so many closet ivegof d xjh hile nobler souls may spend an entire day slaving over a hot stove youre more likely to find me in the lineup at the local frozen food emporium when im planning to entertain i read somewhere that where theres smoke theres toast which more or less sums up the history of my dabblings in the culinary arts i must have been a teenager before i learned how to boil an egg an accomplishment i regarded as the nadir of achievement in the kitchen fortunately i married a man whose cooking skills although also confined largely to the humble egg were a lot more adventurous than my own in the early days of our marriage i enjoyed such exotic variations as fried scrambled and coddled eggs there comes a time however when even eggs in their myriad guises can pall as a steady diet it was around this point in our writers in our community or rather that there were so many gooaf writ ers and many of the stories we will be running are verygood at the close of the contest we had enough stories to keep you enteitained through ghristrnas we havejiih two stories and another appears in this issue at the tribune we are proud to foster newwriting talent such as you will read in the coming weeks some may not be works of great literature but they all have a cer tain charm and an honesty about them if you particularly enjoy a story drop us a note and well pass on your praise through our letters col umn i think area residents can also be proud of the accomplishments of the gifted people who entered our fiction contest and they all should be congratulated on a job well done as our contest slogan stated writeon l y relationship that i discovered that the old man from a culinary per spective at least had not put all hisl eggs in one basket one memorable evening he announced that he wanted me to try r his piece de resistance corned beef fritters that we are still together more than 20 years later says a lot for my affection- for him not to men tion the fortitude of my digestive system n the corned beef i knew and loathed was a salty canned and pre served product whose resemblance to its point of origin was unde tectable it was all too frequently the mainstay of our meals in postwar england when rationing often denied us fresh meat my husband on the other hand was living in argentina at the time and had to force himself to eat the equivalent of a british familys monthly beef rations for breakfast corned beef was prepared and canned in buenos aires and from there shipped to britain luckily for the argentinians it was not avail able for local consumption but the old man developed an inexplicable appreciation of it when he came to england at the age of 11 by the time i tasted his gourmet version of this unlovely dish i had not had the misfortune to eat it for some yarsbut alas it was exactly as i remembered it soon afterwards i learned to cook in selfdefence if thats where the beef isim not going to be the one to open the can wlg
