his large staff his corporate memories are but a distant dot in a life land scape that just keeps on acquiring color it has been 86 years since ed was born in the markham area he attended dickson hill after he was unceremoniously bumped from his sales managers post by a changing of the company guard he began a successful careetin real estate but when his wife died in the mid1980s ed made good on an earlier decision to spend the latter part of his life back where it had all started after all his had been a childless marriage and though he had estab lished many valued friendships in montreal he felt the need to return to his roots upon returning to markham he soon realized it was not the town of his youth so he took up residence in a small apartment building in old stouffville but being a spry octogenarian ed soon became restless his strong christian faith was telling him he should still be making a contribu tion so he made a sort of pact with god pledging his help wherever it might be needed as long as he con tinued to enjoy the good health with which he had been blessed he started to do some driving for the canadian cancer society then eventually showed up at the home support services office in stouf fville offering his services but fearful there would be no place there for a man of his years since that day ed has averaged around 300 runs a year driving local seniors to hospitals and to medical appointments he has become reacquainted with several of his old dickson hill school mates and takes great delight in being that someone his many pas sengers can open up to ed spoke to the rotary club in stouffville just the other week he said he had never done this kind of thing before but that he was still open to new challenges and he turned out to be capable moving speaker he spoke about the things he would do differently if he had his life to live over again not that he was at all discontent with his own life he simply stated the areas where he would do some basic revision he would appreciate his wife more he started out suggesting that she had contributed so much to what he had become the pressures of every day living can contribute towards the taking for granted of a blue chip life part ner he offered he would take more time to help others he added even when his business requirements were great and he would be better prepared for disappointments such as his sudden dismissal from a company to which he had given so much new challenges would be wel comed even sought out he claimed to an even greater degree than he had done so in his full life he would adopt children so as to experience the joy of an extended family in his senior years when friends just cant take the place of relatives and he also said hed better pre pare himself for the inevitability of death making sure his house was in order and that all the details regard ing wills etc were looked after well in advance ed raymer wears the look of a man for whom life has been and continues to be a privilege not a right he realizes he will run out of energy and vitality some day and he hopes that when that time comes there will be someone out there whose life philosophy would include seeing them offer some of their spare time to drive a proud senior to a doctors appointment visiting von nurses at your service the victorian order of nurses gives help when help is needed as
