thursday and friday jan 3 and 4 from 13 pm laughter best medicine for smurthwaite if its true that nice guys fin ish last then that may go a long ways towards explaining why one of the more gentlemanly enjoyable players in the stouf fville amateur hockey league finds himself facing the prospect of spending the christmas holidays in st michaels hospital awaiting the results of an angiogram ken smurthwaite is the last person you would ever think would suffer a heart attack given the commonly accepted notion that this kind of afflic tion is brought on by a lifestyle characterized by uprightness and stress ken is so laid back so given to that easy joviality often dis played by old time farmers that one would think you were sure ly talking about someone else if you tried to tell them the minis- cule heart attack ken suffered last sunday was his second in a brucestapley sports notes year now it must be remembered the operative word here is minis- cule the word kens son doug used to describe his dads heart attack when we talked the other day at that time all that was known was that ken had experienced pain in his chest while playing for his selfsponsored smurth waite heating bruins team sun day morning at the recreation centre jje left the ice and was taken down to markhamstouffville hospital just as he had done when the same thing happened to him early last spring the heart attack itself didnt actually occur until after he had checked into the hospital accord ing to doug now the last time kens ticker pulled a stunt like this he simply went on with life counting the whole thing as a once in a blue moon misfire likely to never occur again he did everything the doctor told him to do said doug eating properly taking regular walks and working out on his stationary bicycle but this time the doctors are pulling out all stops in an effort to get to the bottom of whats going on ken was to be trans ferred to st mikes in toronto to undergo an angiogram doug said they want to discov er if there is a blocked artery or any other irregularity that could have caused this double flutter doug said his dad is quite comfortable but that hes cer tainly not thrilled at staying in hospital through new years which is a possibility however ken and his family are willing to accept the trade off of the holidays at home for future certainty even kens sense of humor has its limita tions and the good man doesnt need this kind of tiring hanging over his head in the meantime doug said the heating cpmpany of which he is an employee is geared to handle the bosss down time without a whole lot of inconve nience the boys always close up shop around christmas said doug getting back to the business of installing furnaces and the like after the new year so in that sense kens timing wasnt so bad x if any of those nurses at the hospital are going around the place feeling sorry for them selves because they have to work the holiday ken is just the guy to cheer them up and set them to enjoying a good laugh in fact ken will probably be challenging them all to foot races just like he did when he was laid up last spring so keep the mirth coming ken im sure that you more than anyone else dont have to be reminded that laughter is the best medicine and we hope to see you back on the ice before too long after all your want to get your spon sors moneys worth dont you
