1 p4trtoune september 19 1990 st competing for growth a viable future for whitchurch- stouffvilles tax base lies largely with politicians at york regional council and the pendulum of suc cess is again swinging out of reach for mayor fran sainsbury the mayor making a pitch at the regional level last week to exempt 1300 acres of prime industrial land in gormley from a restrictive sewageonprivatelands policy was forceful but succeeded only in humoring officials of yorks larger municipalities clearly they are hiding behind a mask of good intentions for future york planning but do not want to compete with stouffville for lucra tive industrial tax revenues if stouffville were on the so- called lig pipe markham new market and richmond hill would undoubtedly lose thousands of tax dollars while competing with a poor cousin like wwtchurchstoufrville here again we have our lone rep resentative fighting for the best interests of stouffville but the crash and burn is always inevitable when dealing with tax hungry municipalities already fat in the middle from too many years of easy success and thats too damned bad for the rest of us break- in bursts bubble of security someone went looking through my drawers last week its an eerie feeling when you get home from work and realize that someone has entered your house uninvited naively i felt that my quiet stouffville street was- immune to such offenses but the bubble of safety i thought i lived in burst when i came home and was told by my husband that the house had been broken into the culprits pried the storm screen out of a back window and managed to push up the sash of the interior window with which i have great difficulty from the inside to get into the house once inside they grabbed all the change they could find off a change plate and out of a bank they searched our bedroom draw ers for more money and came up mra viewpoint wtwmmsmmsmm paula crowell with another 4xjs then they hit the hall table where i had an enve lope for someone with 42 in it they took that too they ripped open an anniversary card i intend ed to send to friends thinking i suppose there might be cash inside when they found none they threw the card aside they made their way to the kitchen and opened all the canis ters and left the lids askew thankfully they didnt break anything they didnt take any thing more than the 75 or so they came up with and they didnt tear the house apart as thieves are known to do by the nature of the crime id say these are young teenage boys they werent experienced enough to take things that could be pawned or fenced but were strong enough to get a sticky window open my relief at them leaving the house intact was matched by my editors mail curiosity at what kind of kids would do this sort of thing i think theyre basically decent but bored and looking for a new game perhaps theyre the type of kids that revel in a challenge whose parents admire their sense of adventure this time the conquest got out of hand weve taken precautions at our house so that such an event is unlikely to occur and weve warned the neighbors about the presence of thieves in the area police take fingerprints at crime scenes such as this while no one was caught this time around thieves should be warned that larks like this one arent taken lightly you can never be too sure whos watching and someday the police may find that your fingerprints match those taken at other breakin scenes thats when the axe falls until then were grateful that we learned our lesson rather inexpen sively no one can prevent a breakin from happening but you can make it more difficult for the culprit to get in secure your windows and doors when youre going out and- leave lights on if youre going to be away that wayyoullkeep have looked forward to it for a couple of rea sons first of all i know there is a need for a track at our high school or any of the central secondary school facilities in the york region secondly i am really interested in seeing the public sector volun teers succeed in getting together with government in this case the york region board of education and dedicating their drive and enthusiasm to completing this or any other joint worthwhile project your bruce stapley s sport notes of sept 4 was way out of line mr stapley states that the board is not capable of seeing a sizeable project through without wasting time and money on studies consul tants and outside experts this project has grown to a cost of more than 400000and there has been no definite plan put for ward to incorporate drainage sup ply of site services nor the bringing to grade of the entire site these are basic things that dont require outside experts but do require some common sense per haps the board shares the same doubts about the private sectors plans for the project that mr stap ley feels about the board mr stapley if the board of edu cation constructed any type of facility on their site without going through a public tendering process so that those citizens who do not share your exact enthusiasm for the project and the expenditure of public funds on necessary types of projects your own paper would then most certainly castigate them for their lack of responsibility lknow how badly you want this project to go ahead and i know how badly it is needed with all the items you feel should be included offer your paper and your col umn as a factor to mediate this whole affair do not take unwar ranted potshots at those people who are required by law to spend your money in a specified fashion every community should be so lucky as to have the ged stone- houses martin johannessens and don bigionis offering to promote and expedite these really important projects responsible local governments are an unusual blessing also i look forward to seeing the fall track meet for the region of york on our new facility next autumn 1991 jack watson stouffville
