tribune september 19 1990 pll toronto is not the world class of new york over the past few years theres been much anguished navel gazing on the gripping issue of whether or not toronto qualifies as a worldclass city although our modern monu ment to worldclass status the dome has given torontonians more confidence in their eligi bility its distressing to learn the city is now in imminent danger of being home to the second tallest free standing structure in the world thanks to pushy foreigners who insist on upstaging us after more than a decade of being numero uno i recently visited a city whose worldclass ranking is unques tionable new yorks garbage noise level and poverty are right up there with the best or worst and leave toronto with out a prayer although in the unlikely event that cleanliness ever becomes a prerequisite for a worldclass designation torontos admission to the elite will be assured having survived a hairraising cab ride from la guardia dur ing which the cheerful driver constantly cut in front of other cars squealed his tires and kept hishand firmly on the horn we found ourselves at the core of the big apple it was late after noon when we arrived both shaken and stirred and times square looked discouragingly seedy- as we left our cab we were assailed by a smell which was unpleasantly redolent of mature garbage and clogged drains by nightfall however the whole area underwent an incredible transformation lights blazed and the city came alive with impromptu street theatre one black orator harangued his audience urging them not sell kates corner kate gilderdale out to pathetic white trash ide als being from ontario we politely heeded pedestrian traf fic signals as we stood in splendid isola tion on the curb faithfully obeying the dont walk sign the rest of the world surged negligently on and it soon became apparent that this com mand was regarded as a chal lenge rather than a rule the skills exhibited by the crowd as they dodged and wove between four or five lanes of cars would not have been unworthy of muhammad ah in his heyday the next day we left times square and took in the rarefied atmosphere of central park south with its glitzy hotels almost garbagefree streets and powerful smell of money in the air ladies of uncertain age cling ing grimly to the duchess of windsors adage one can never be too thin or too rich tottered down fifth avenue on precari ously high heels their carefully coiffed hair in unlikely shades of brown their little chanel suits perfectly tailored to their birdlike torsos just a few miles away at the- north end of the park we visit ed harlem where graffiti and abandoned buildings replaced the liveried footmen and the ubiquitous horse and carriage rides of the south end new york is a city of contrasts not all of them pleasant its excit ing and invigorating and it never closes and yes its world class a shot of newyork is a pow erful stimulant and i know ill go back but if toronto doesnt quite qualify as world class in the same way as the big apple i for one wont lose any sleep over the fact probationary driving program welcomed by police in preparing to write an arti cle on probationary driving permits i recalled a recent conversation with a friend who is the father of a teenaged daughter the man was justifiably con cerned with his daughters driv ing attitudes she seems to believe that successfully obtaining her pro bationary licence coupled with the small amount of driving practice she has performed are sufficient to establish her as an experienced driver her father correctly recog nizes that it takes years of practice in all kinds of weather and road conditions tobecome a good driver the fact is that man of us have much to learn when it comes to driving the fantastic growth of york region is mirrored in the dras tic changes in traffic patterns on regional roads the best drivers are those who drive defensively and who are always out for the other guy- q
