saturday failing behind the visiting aurora rovers 40 in the firsthalf but the stouffville squad came out flying for the second segment with ziegfried reiter netting a pair of goals to go with a solo from his brother manfred to bring the score to 43 but it wasnt meant to be as the spurs missed an open net with less than five minutes remaining and bounced two shots off the goal post sunday the spurs led muskoka united 10 and 21 but wound up losing 32 when the visitors took advantage of a late game push by the stouffville team which was going for the win anton wilson on a penalty kick and ziegfried reiter notched the spurs goals spurs manager bill perrie said his team played well but didnt get the breaks saturday against aurora were all over them at the end he said we just heeded a few more minutes and it was the same thing sunday but were coming along and the boys feel good about the team itll just take some time to iron out the bugs in earlier action the spurs were the victim of penalty kicks as they fell 32 to owen sound in recent action at the recreation centre fields the spurs who led 10 at the half surrendered the tying and go ahead goals on penalty kicks in the second half the stouffville club had survived the first free kick but the owen sound player was allowed another try when the refer ee claimed his original effort had been obstructed by a stouffville player when the spurs pushed in an attempt to even the score the visi tors clicked again to make it 31 the stouffville squad netted their second marker with five minutes left inthe game but couldnt come up with the equalizer sweeper anthony wilson who is the team captain had both goals for the spurs the stouffville merchants simply ran out of gas at the ontario junior a fastball championships held in markham over the weekend the merchants who captured the allontario crown in july and placed fourth at the national competition earlier this month went down in two games straight at the anticlimactic a level tournament the shortstaffed merchants fell 87 to the oshawa juniors in their open ing encounter then dropped a 52 decision to the scarborough juniors the merchants were without the service of mainstays tim evans chris burkholder john batten and craig crawford all of whom were either nursing injuries or fulfilling other commitments merchants coach fred crawford said that while he was disappointed by his teams showing he was not surprised we were just flat i wasnt expecting great things with so many of our good players missing its a shame to end on a bad note but the boys have had a very good year he said for us the climax of the season was the nationals its been such a long season some of our boys have been going since february when they were practicing indoors crawford said his team got in trouble early in each game and couldnt comeback we were down 50 to oshawa in the first inning and then we got behind scarborough 30 in the first and these are teams weve beaten all season in league play the merchants who finish out their season at memorial park tonight against the oshawa merchants will not be participating in the oshawa and district mens fastball league playoffs crawford said it was a matter of not being able to field his best team due to the lateness of the starting date for the post season competition they put it off until well into september by that time a lot of our guys will have gone back to college or university so we wont be in it girls hockey registrations the whitchurchstouffville girls hockey association wsgha will hold its final registration for the upcoming season on thursday sept 6 at the recreation centre girls from the ages of eight and up are eligible to sign with an equipment and skate exchange planned for the same evenidg boys who have outgrown their equipment are also welcome to attend the exchange there will be five levels in the wsgha this season including junior house league age 812 pee wee rep intermediate senior d and senior c charity golf tourney at 4 seasons theyll be teeing off for the canadian cancer society at the claremont 4 seasons golf and country club sept 1 the claremont facility which each year holds a
