st ftfpll classic cars offer stouffville nostalgic trip bruce stapley correspondent mario greco recalls that as a boy growing up in italy he never had many toys to play with but since opening his vintage car operation at the corner on hwys 47 and 48 in ringwood hes finally getting the chance to make up for what he missed as a kid the 47yearold agincourt resident who since 1973 has owned the property where his new rockin wheels glassies business is situated started collecting 1950s and 60s classics 15 years ago when upper canada post and beam upped its stakes several months back mario and his partner frank cammisa decided to go ahead with the classic car business they had talked about for so long with 40 cars in their inventory and more arriving every week from all over the united states and canada rockin wheels is a veritable mecca for car buffs from the baby boomers generation mario who recently sold his own fruit business has no experience selling cars but says hes not really looking at his new interest as a busi ness venture when i was a kid i never had a toy to play with he says these are the toys i never had and i really appreciatethem for me its just a lot of fun a hobby as much as a business marios toys are scattered all over the back lot with three lying about his showroom floor they include a white 1963 mercedes 280 se a 1963 corvette backsplit a 1961 lincoln a 1959 cadillac and the muchcoveted 1956 thunderbird convertible the place is as much a museum as a place of business mario suggests people come in here and say wow i got married in one of these or i had one of these 20 years ago i wish i had it now but i sold it when his customers shell out anywhere from 6000 to 50000 to pur chase one of marios playthings he claims they are indulging themselves in a nostalgia trip they are buying memories its a toy you dont drive it to work you take it out on sunday afternoon we call them toys for big boys marios insists he gets as much of a kick out of watching peoples reac tions to his models as the visitors are getting themselves on saturdays he says there are as many as 25 people on the property at any given time i enjoy seeing the people come in they kick the tires and plan how they are going to save enough money to buy one some day the showroom itself is a throwback to the 50s with its black and white tiled floor posters of james dean marilyn monroe and elvis presley and pictures of collector cars from that era mario stands in stark contrast to the image of the typical used car salesman sharing in the enthusiasm of the people who stop by while refusing to be pushy he hopes his interest in the cars wont wane now that hes exposed to them everyday but feels his constant trips to the us in pursuit of new inventory will keep his excitement level high in addition to his classics mario includes in his collection several kit- cars including a 1929 bugatti most of his cars are 50s and 60s vin tage although he has included the odd early 70s model with so many classics on the property he says he is well aware of the need for tight topnotch security to that end he has employed the ser vices of a couple of alert german shepherds to keep vandals out of his lot when hes not there with the dogs and our alarm inside were pretty well protected mario points out his interest is restricted to the buying and selling of vintage cars and that he is not in the restoration business we have a mechanic on fulltime for little things we want the cars to be in as good a condition as possible when we sell them but we send them out to a specialized shop if there are real problems as for warranties mario just smiles you cant put a warranty on a 30yearold car you can only hope they continue to run well but when it comes to his car collection one thing is guaranteed mario greco will always have his favorite toys to play with when his friends drop by public meeting concerning a proposed zoning bylaw amendment minimum
