race to the finish pnotosjoerd w1tteveen children at cedar beach in the musselman lake area take off at the start of afoot race held in the area last saturday a huge crowd of residents turned out for a day of fun in the sun which included games and activities tor children in the community a barbecue of summer foods highlighted the day and the weather cooperated to help make the event a success families were but in full force and the children were kept busy with the planned activities cleanup a priority musselman lake groups back water study results tracy kibble staff reporter two musselman lake environmental groups packed council chambers to endorse recommendations from a water quality study taken last year one group urged officials at the aug 14 meeting to help clear the lake of serious environmental deterioration ken jobe a member of the sierra club york region and spokesman for the lake musselman club accused council of deferring and ignoring- the clubs ongoing efforts to clean up the lake by turning deaf ears to the problem and possible solutions lake simcoe and region conservation authority lsrca representatives who formulated the study also presented the musselman lake surface water quality report 1989 results and objectives to council at the meeting the physical chemical and biological status of the kettle lake was discussed with officials and was the lsrcas first public presentation of the document mr jobe urged officials to utilize the report as a guideline and said its time we rolled up our sleeves and got to work on cleaning up the lake bylaws and a master drainage plan must become a priority mr jobe stressed the sierra club endorsed each of the lsrca recommendations including a ban on all motorboats a stoop and scoop program and an investigation into septic systems meanwhile christine laing spokesman for the musselman lakeenvironmental advisory corporation mleac disagreed with the sierra clubs plea to ban all motorboats stating boating is not a major concern at this time mrs laing who said it seems impossible to ban all boats suggested placing a limit on the size of motors allowed in the lake she said the main concern now is to eliminate phosphorus loading we are willing to work with the town to study the feasibility of an oxygen system for the lake she said adding that mleac would be willing to organize fundraising to collect taxdeductible donations to buy the oxygen system other priorities with mleac are educating the public to decrease the loading system of the substandard septic system to practice lawn fertilizing alternatives and to physically work to clean up the lake weed harvest programs another lsrca recommendation is also a high priority with mleac who removed truckloads of dead weeds last year mike walters of the lsrca said weed harvesting is an excellent idea stating dead weeds absorb phosphorus and rob water life of oxygen weed removal is an effective means of phosphorus removal mr walters said council listened to each groups presentation and will further review the lsrca recommendations and later discuss the feasibility of each i cedar beach residents share an active day seepage18 gffiv vxsmbtsm 4 v i rt erwg0italezt im our kate sounds off about the monday blahs see page 7 jr
