p4 tribune august 1 1990 dumpsite rumblings the mounting garbage crisis has finally made its way to york regions doorstep regional politicians meanwhile are trying to hold up their end of a political bargain as part of a multi- region task force which is seeking future landfill sites for our waste and the resulting hue and cry that will be heard when a consul tant brings about recommendations for suitable sites will be no suprise no one wants a dumpsite how ever interim it may be in their back yard but few it seems fully appreci- ate the level of the waste crisis which is sending even the most hardened officials into political lathers in all this there is a wellfounded fear that whitchurchstouffville could be selected as the york site for a shortterm dump there are sites available for feasi bility studies within our boundaries which the mayor is concerned about and one has to consider whitchurchstouffvilles lack of voting power at the regional table to date there are no indications that a site is being favored here but still there is cause for concern how far can one vote for whitchurchstouffville at the regional level take us toxic brew being created by feds i wasnt aware there were hundreds of things you can do now for the environment evidently there is and its all listed clearly on recycled paper no less in a booklet published by environment canada it offers environmentally friendly tips for individuals whether they are at home work or on vacation it impressed the heck out of me and those i discussed the booklet with but does little to restore faith for many of us in the federal government thus there are a number of environmentally sensitive and prudent suggestions as they relate to our natural surround ings but there is still a number of issues that pollute both our beliefs in bm the pm and the llilllp litis fsasftssft at random steve houston decisions his government has made of late consider the following things that did little to clean up our country the toxic meech lake accord with its excessive pack aging and nonbiodegradable language the accord has poi soned both our interprovincial relations and our attempt at becoming one nation and the byproducts of the failed plan ill will and redun dant rhetoric simply stink stouffvilleuxbridge tribune publisher editorinchief patricia pappas jo ann stevenson editor director of advertising retail advertising mgr for years according to experts until then there is little hope for a salvage operation the gst effluent being read- l ied for discharge into our econo my this noxious federal initiative has already seeped into most sectors of the country as hard working people prepare to battle it key federal personnel have already taken to the airwaves to calm a nervous populace and minimize the damage being editors mail done to our faltering economy antipollution experts say the gst although it hasnt yet been let loose is expected to eat away at bank accounts and billfolds while simultaneously feeding inflationary pressures the result many fear could be a costly cleanup battle waged by the very people who unleashed it on an unsuspecting nation free trade depletion although this measure was sup posed to clear the air and make us all breathe easier while trad ing in a partnership with the us little benefits have sur faced as a consequence of the plan to date trade continues to falter it is still being nurtured as an economicallyfriendly initiative but isnt doing much to boost faith here at home though the picture is bleak in relation to the aforementioned there are things we can do as individuals to help minimize the effects of the pollutants to wit stay away from discussions of meech lake which serve only to extend its halflife and leave a bad taste in your mouth dont fan the flames of the gst by contributing to its growth which is to say you should not make unnecessary purchases youd be surprised how many uses you can get out of say an automobile a good rule of thumb here is to conserve conserve conserve finally let the feds know how you feel about these measures which have set the country back several years in its fight to be a clean strong nation if all else fails keep in mind that politicians can be recycled hospital let citizen down dear editor on july 1 1 went to the emergency room of the new markham stouffville hospital due to a relatively deep cut on my hand after waiting two hours bleeding the entire time i was finally seen by a doctor it was not apparent to my husband and i that the emergency room was busy following this on monday july 2 my aunt was transported to the same hospital via ambulance after a fall at her home she was obviously in much discomfort but it still took the doctor nearly one hour to see her after examining her the doctor ordered xrays by this time we had been there for three hours after reading the xrays the doctor informed us that there was a minor break to her right knee and fluid on her left knee the doctor explained that they would splint the right knee so she could go home i spoke to the doctor and explained that she is a very frail 62yearold who lives by herself unfortunately i was not able to take her into her apartment because of a long flight of stairs i questioned whether they could possibly admit her for a day or so until we could set up some home care but the doctor said there was no need for her to be admitted into the hospital and that she could go home she was sent home with crutches that she is unable to use to rest and stay off her feet on tuesday after speaking to her family doctor who was floored at the thought of the hospital sending her home he immediately arranged home care for her where is the sense in all this why do we pay for ohip why did we help with the fundraising for a new hospital when they cannot help the sick and needy on tuesday i found out that the new hospital has a chronic care ward for the elderly or very sick who are unable to take care of themselves when family is away sincerely r wallace
