steering committee to collectively develop a waste management sys tem for implementation by 1997 as a member of swisc york region is obliged to nominate an interim landfill site to provide short term relief from 1993 tol996 in order to find a temporary loca tion to house the regions garbage until a longterm solution is reached the region has embarked on its own planning process to locate landfill capacity within york regions borders to deal with the shortfall called the york region contingency landfill site search the region has hired the institute of environmental research 1985 inc of willowdale a consultant group which will supply regional politicians with a number of loca tions suitable for solid waste says markham regional councillor ron moran these locations and recommen dations will be presented to the region at that time councillor moran said but whitchurchstouffville mayor fran sainsbury says her biggest fear is that the study could find one of the towns 16 operating gravel pits as an ideal spot espe cially in one location where clay is already being removed and trans ported to the keele valley landfill for its lining if the clay is good enough to line keele it may be good enough to start a landfill site where a pit already exists mayor sainsbury says thats what garbage is mining in reverse my biggest concern is that open pit thats why vaughan didnt want the pit dug right there at keele valley because it could have meant a further expansion instead they chose to truck it 26 miles mayor sainsbury says however negotiating the neces sary agreements with metro toron to and the town of vaughan keele valley will be difficult and may prove impossible says ms simp son the consultants information officer and senior planner so the search is on and local officials have recently shown con cern and are nervous the region could choose whitchurchstouf fville as the location for a regional dump site but we are looking at a scientifi cally correct terrain and hydrogeo logical area and the site is just as apt to be located in a larger munici pality as a smaller one mrking says however local officials say the region could look at the gormley aggregates site as a logical choice because there is already a burrow pit there when clay was removed for an addition to vaughan s keele valley site this planning process will no doubt be controversial ms simp son adds in a recent letter to local media york regions contingency landfill site search could find whitchurchstouffville as the ideal choice for a shortterm garbage dump but there are eight other municipalities to choose from there is nothing to suggest whitchurchstouffville would be a more suitable area than one of the larger municipalities mr king maintains water quality poses risk alaska trek a big success the springvale 50 plus group toured alaska and many of canadas western cities enjoying great accommodation and excellent tour guides the alaska trip committee says the springvale group started their tour june 16 when they flew to edmonton there tour guide john parsons met them with the assistance of mr parsons and stouffvilles own dave bennett the group set off from edmonton the group travelled to prince rupert where they board ed a ferry travelling the inside passage for 800 km docking at skagway boarding a bus in skagway the group went on to whitehorse dawson fairbanks anchorage valdez tok watson lake fort nelson grand prairie jasper and calgary the group toured museums ice fields national parks and viewed many glaciers and mountains taking in the history and geography offered by the tour guide tracy kibble staff reporter people who swim in mussel- mans lake could be susceptible to health risks caused by bacteria already in the water according to the 1989 musselman lake sur face water quality report the 47page report released two weeks ago by the lake sim- coe region conservation author ity lsrca shows there could be a health risk to swimmers due to bacteria counts in the water in addition to phosphorus inputs the 1982 report also iden tified bacterial contamination as a potential problem plaguing the lake the lake simcoe region convservation authority lrsca study in cooperation with the public health department and the environment ministry points out the report indicates that bacte ria levels must exceed the provincial water quality objec tives in order that placards or warnings be placed at public beaches and states the york region health unit has occasion ally placarded beaches at mussel- man lake due to unacceptably high bacteria concentrations bacteria is a combination of fungi and viruses in the water including fecal coliform bacteria concentrations that showed up in 1982 studies and although the levels have not increased in 1989 they have not decreased the study shows bacteria is not lifethreatening but can cause rashes eye throat nose and ear infections and upset stomachs research shows due to concerns from local groups three government investi gators with the help of the lake in the past york health officials have issued warnings at musselman lake beaches musselman club photographs investigated 12 stormwater cul verts that flow directly into mus- selmans lake surprisingly all the drain pipes are located on or near public beaches there are three drains along the southwesterly shores or glen- dale beach and another four stormwater drains along the southeasterly shores and finally another five stormwater drains run the entire length of the northern shores from connor beach to cedar beach for the 12 stormwater drains investigated there are as many inletoutlet piping systems along every shore where water can be pumped out of the lake and where runoff can drain into the lake samples were taken from each of the abovementioned loca tions revealing fecal coliform did in fact exceed the moe acceptability levels at one loca tion just north of wagon wheel ranch known as churchill pub lic beach all other beaches were at acceptable levels the report shows the report also includes precip itation data which indicates the highest rain count in 1989 fell between july and september making bacteria counts higher during those months nutrients chemicals bacteria and suspended solids are all car ried into the lake by rain events which can in a very short time greatly affect the concentration of the many of the water quality parameters the report states there were no residential homes which contributed to stormwater outlets along mussel man lake according to the study town officials are expected to comment on the study and its recommendations at its aug 14 meeting officials from the lsrca will be on hand at the upcoming meeting the springvale 50 plus group
