p10 tribune august 1 1990 outdoors pike source of mixed opinions among anglers artbriggsjude correspondent during an inactive period while fishing your favorite lake have you ever given a thought as to what inland game fish is the most widespread in the northern hemi sphere if you start thinking a salmon or a trout species or even a sturgeon youre oceans away from the right answer to arrive at the fish in question you have to know that this particu lar finny individual also has the greatest lovehate relationship with sports fishermen of any species they catch in some places it is classed with coarse fish and may be taken dur ing the regulated spring season with a bow and arrow a spear or a dip net in such areas it is looked upon as a nuisance and a destroyer of other more important species on the other hand there are loca tions where it is held in high esteem as a trophy fish that annu ally attracts large numbers of anglers to test their skills landing it the answer is of course the northern pike or great northern as they are more often referred to by the american anglers those who would treat them with some measure of disdain have other less inspiring titles for them names like jacks jackfish or even snakes how a fish can hold such a wide variance of opinion on the fisher mans scale is a question in itself while it is delicious food the while the largest pike caught by rod and reel in north america was just over 46 pounds there are plenty of lunkers out there waiting to give you a good tussle flesh is sweet white and flaky it must be prepared correctly skin ning of bone searching after filleting these fish possibly you should be looking at your filleting prowess or just maybe you should be doing some soul searching after taking pike that if allowed to grow a little more would produce a pair of decentsized fil lets there are many methods and techniques for catch ing northern pike at this time of the year the larger pike will move to the deeper water leaving the shallows mostly to what we call the hammerhandles look for the big ones along dropoffs rock ledges or the deep water side of a sheal or island a weed bed with a known hole near by is a good bet just remember the fish will be down deeper on bright days and up a bit if its overcast with the coming of august and its usual hot days these bigger fish will seek out even deeper water the trick of course is to get your bait down to where the fish are lying if you know the lake trolling or casting can be highly productive use the old standby red and white daredevil or a deep running buck- tail spinner in the largest size you have weighted flatfish or deep run ning rapalas also catch plenty of big pike each season mark the spot if you do hook a large pike because it indicates that the conditions are right for more fish to be there slow trolling with large live minnows in the early morning or in the evening is another good way to boat big northern pike some of the best fun ive had fishing for pike was using big 10 or 12 inch sucker minnows and a bobber the technique was simple just set the bait to the necessary depth by attaching the bobber on the line let the liphooked minnow swim away from the boat and over a known dropoff when the bobber stops skating around the surface and plunges out of sight get ready soon it will reappear and when it starts down the second time strike hard that sized bait is going to pull old grandpa pike right out of the sunken woodwork you try it and see while the largest pike caught by rod and reel in north america was just over 46 pounds there are plenty of lunkers out there waiting to give you a good tussle and when you get a good one on you wont be muttering about a darn jackfish youll be trying to hang on to a bean spotted elongat ed shape with a mouthful of nee dle sharp teeth a greenbodied creambellied critter that has the stubbornness of a mule and the disposition of a cornered coon why if you dont watch your self
