tribune july 25 1990 p3 michael kusner no instant liberal defeat plan never used from page 1 we cannot allow an instant lib eral to win kusner said i have been a member of the party for more than 20 years and mrs sainsbury has been in the party for several years mayor sainsbury confirmed the existence of the agreement between her and kusner she said she objected to scarpitti for reasons similar to kusners i was concerned that two long- term liberals should support each other she said she said mr scarpitti a former independent had been closely asso ciated with markham mpp don cousens and markham mayor tony roman both of them conservatives mr scarpitti said he disagrees with his opponents because the lib eral party is open for new members like him the political process allows peo ple to choose he said i hope that michael kusner is not saying that the political process is closed to new members is he saying that we can use new members to vote for old members but for heavens sake they should not run mayor sainsbury said she and mr kusner agreed to support each other when mr kusner and his campaign manager visited her early in june it was them who came to me she said however she said the agreement may not have guaranteed mr scarpitti s loss even if he did not have the majority of votes even if she had announced her backing for mnkusner her supporters may not have followed her i cant make anyone vote this way or that way she said john johnson an organizer at the ontario liberal party headquarters said deals like the agreement between mrs sainsbury and mr kusner are legal the party allows any kind of dealmaking he said stouffville mayor has positive outlook alan shackleton tribune staf despite her unsuccessful bid at win ning the liberal nomination for markham riding last week whitchurch- stouffville mayor fran sainsbury is tak ing a positive outlook on the future moments after hearing she had lost the nomination to frank scarpitti a york regional councillor from markham mrs sainsbury said she would be back at her desk at die whitchurchstouffville municipal offices she wouldnt make any predictions on her political future past 1991 when the next round of municipal elections are slated life will gon she said but not in markham mayor sainsburys bid for the liberal nomination was in essence a return to the mayors roots as she grew up in unionville and was a longtime markham area resident until moving north to stouffville some of her opponents implied that the markham riding would be better served by a candidate who lives within its boundaries not in stouffville which is in the yorkdurham riding however she pointed out in her speech prior to the voting that she had a long association with markham and was hardly a parachute candidate i have four generations of family in markham and know the issues and con cerns she said however the voters at the nomination meeting didnt see it that way and frank scarpitti won the candidacy on the first ballot with almost 60 per cent of the vote in total he took 728 votes while mayor sainsbury and michael kusner each had 244 votes heading into the meeting mrs sains bury had signed up 926 members for the riding but less than a third showed up for the actual vote getting the members out proved to be the key to victory for mr scarpitti as he managed to have more than half of his supporters show up for the election thursday night mrs sainsbury had announced her intention seek the nomination long before mr scarpitti but he still managed to sign up more members for which she gave him full credit frank had more members and he moved quite quickly she said though disappointed with the result she said that running for provincial poli tics had long been something she wished to do and she would have regretted never having made the effort ive worked long and hard for the liberals and wanted a chance to run provincially said mrs sainsbury who has been mayor of whitchurchstouf fville since 1985 and a member of coun cil since 1982 with former uxbridge mayor bill ballinger firmly entrenched as the liber al mpp for yorkdurham the only other logical location for her to seek a nomina tion was markham riding this was a return to my roots and i did have a lot support she said it was something i wanted to do and if i hadnt tried for it i would have always won dered what might have happened fran sainsbury positive outlook no schools hurts students board told a pledge to stop building schools will hurt studentsnot home builders says the ontario home builders associa tion this is the associations response to a threat by the york region board of education to stop building schools if its ability to collect lot levies is curtailed boards are able to collect levies added to the price of new homes in a subdivi sion to offset the cost of school construction in the neigh borhood but the ohb a had threatened to launch an appeal to pre vent boards from collecting the money which prompted the york region public school trustees to promise to cease school construction those who will suffer will be students and young fami lies not just york region builders states a letter signed by ohb a president john mansfield on june 11 the association released its plan to fight the new home tax on the grounds that it is unconstitutional it would rather see school boards take advantage of long- term financing in the form of municipal bonds to raise funds this money would enable boards to build schools before they are needed instead of collecting taxes after the fact argued the ohba bonds provide the opportunity to spread the cost of infrastructure over the appropriate benefitting community rather than hitting the homebuyer with major upfront fees mr mansfield said according to the ohba lot levies place an unfair tax burden on new home buyers and renters while providing an undependable and inconsistent source of revenue for the boards the association represents more than 4000 companies which produce 80 per cent of ontarios new homes earn extra money become a carrier today call 6402100 attention flyer advertisers we can deliver your
