mjmwmmmmm eye on environment shelley galloway summer can be green too summer is here and off we go to enjoy our cottages lakes and wilder ness areas hopefully with the new enthusiasm for environmental aware- ness we can leam to enjoy green hol idays here are some tips and things to think about while on vacation this summer when camping try and use one of the new lightweight camping stoves instead of lighting a campfire for all your cooking needs this saves wood and reduces fire hazards perhaps your campground could organize one cen tral campfire for the obligatory weiner and marshmallow roasting instead of having latenight fires at every camp site you may discover that it is rather pleasant to sit out suitably protected from insects and watch the day end without the distraction of a fire use only the existing trails and campsites so that you minimize dam age to the vegetation carry everything out that you bring in to the wilderness so that you affect it as little as possible do all washing away from rivers and lake so they are not altered by soaps shampoos and detergents it is wrong to assume that our heavily utilized lakes and rivers can continually absorb the grey water pollution without harm to the wildlife who depend upon them at the cottage there are over half a million cottages in canada and cot tagers apart from having a significant impact upon environment themselves can clearly see the effects of over use and pollution when they return year after year to the same area there are many ways to reduce the impact of a cottage on the surrounding environment a very important consideration human waste disposal cottages built a number of years ago may discharge their waste directly into lakes or rivers which should be corrected either with a biological toilet or with a septic bed located a suitable distance from the water this makes good sense especially when many such cottages also draw their water directly from the same river or lake a dock and access for swimming are certainly essential for cottage life in most cases but it is not necessary to have a closely cropped lawn right down to the waters edge all along the shore allowing natural vegetation to thrive will encourage more interesting wildlife to visit your property and will also help prevent soil erosion in addi tion the plants and silt they collect will help filter and clean the water wet lands are also very important for filter ing water so avoid filling in such eco logically valuable land avoid disturbing known breeding grounds especially in the early spring and summer do not allow dogs to run at large as they can have a damaging and drastic affect on local wildlife last but not least make the effort to separate the recyclable material from your garbage and bring it home for your blue box dont take a holiday from your blue box program when boating never throw garbage overboard take it all back to shore and separate the recyclables before dis carding there are now special oil recycling tanks at most marinas and government docks for discarding waste oil one litre of spilled oil can contami nate up to 2 million litres of water so please be careful com in up r st and business owners in the town of whitchurchstouffville new municipal address system in preparation for the new 911 emergency response plan the town of whitchurchstouffville has undertaken the task of assigning new numbers for all properties on major town roads the majority of the properties affected currently do not have assigned numbers however some renumbering will be required on certain streets namely stouffville road main street the ninth line and the 10th concession which are presently numbered note the proposed renumbering scheme does not affect properties in existing residential or industrial subdivisions the main purpose of the new municipal address system is to provide a uniform numbering scheme throughout the town this uniformity is a major component to the 911 emergency response plan the numbering scheme will assist in identifying and locating properties by the emergency service police fire department and ambulance services for a quicker response another benefit of the uniform numbering scheme will be the easier identification of your property by customer service related businesses ie heating oil deliveries hydro telephone etc the proper posting of your new number will also eliminate confusing directions to your property eg 65 main street east or west kennedy road north of bloomington the second laneway past the green barn on the west side in order to display your new number most effectively standardized reflective signs will be made available to residents of the town of whitchurchstouffville affected by this change at a cost of 1000 per sign these
