vhwi wm miftwr p4 tribune may 30 1990 st m yorkdhc is needed york regions recent round of discussion and debate in bringing together a steering committee for a district health council is long over due and when brought together and pressed into action in york region it should do away with many of the bureaucratic and political roadblocks that have held up our hospitals in the past when seeking funds or equipment though by its very a nature a bureaucratic body a health council will decide on behalf of yorks health care facilities and providers what is needed and where it will go and when there is a mechanism in place to avoid duplication of services or infighting among yorks hospitals or other facilities the people who most need the help will benefit its a slow process in developing a district health council that will work in this region but one that is essential particularly at atime when york is struggling to catch up with the runaway growth of the 1980s the time to evenhandedly decide on needs is now this is the task the health council faces who s your choice for top citizen its that time of year again the leaves have turned the west end of stouffvilles main street into a living canopy people are busy in their gardens slopitch athletes are getting fit again in the town park and the tribune is gear ing up for its annual search for the communitys citizen of the year and given the impressive array of past recipients this years choice will once again personify the type of individual who makes stouf- fville a fabulous place to be the names and faces that adorn the wall of fame at stouffvilles recreation complex is a virtual whos who of selfless energetic and communityminded citizens who we all know jim thomas for instance was seen by many last year as a person who not only had the write stuff but who transcended the role of at random steve houston community newspaper editor to be one who helped better the town of whitchurchstouffville others such as lome boadwayi jean barkey wayne feasby fran sainsbury and dr john button illustrate the wide scope of talent that is homegrown here in stouf- fville now as plans for this years event get into full swing we seek your help in telling us just who you think should be chosen the 1990 citizen of the year is it your neighbor a friend a student or senior citizen you tell us there are no strict rules for nomination and our panel will sift through the entries as the deadline nears but the beauty of choosing our citizen of the year or sportsman of the year is that it officially rec ognizes the efforts and contribu tions our own residents make to the community editors mail in turn it shows others that hard work and caring isnt for naught there are no monetary gains nor are their offers of product endorse ment from corporate giants there is simply a sense of satisfaction that tells the recipients stouffville appreciates what you have done for for the community and for what its worth people chosen for their contributions achieve a quiet sort of celebrity sta tus in the community again it is the community saying you have achieved something for which you can be proud we applaud you of course this sort of fanfare may not appeal to some i think theres a basic human desire that compels most of us to pat someone on the back when we see that a job is well done who do you think is our citizen of the year for 1990 judging by the nominations received to date there are quite a few worthy recipients out there and it makes our job more fun when we see the community get involved in the campaign take the time to think about it and turn to page7 in this edition if you already have someone in mind well be waiting anxiously to find out your thoughts on the matter stouffvilleuxbridge tribune publisher editor a man once said to be silent is to consent to something therefore i find it necessary to speak out and share my feelings with you the last eight months as the barn director has given me the opportunity meet and get to know many wonderful kids and their fam ilies in the area sometimes they choose to share personal things with me that are of a happy nature and sometimes they share something that is unpleasant and that would break your heart i have found that regardless of financial status age or religious beliefs many people are hurting in some area of their lives in our com munity ive learned to appreciate and love everyone that comes to the barn and since learning of the psychic fair have become protective i do not want any harm to come to any one the psychic fair has really opened my eyes to the physical and spiritual needs in our community and i have decided to make a com mitment to the areas in need i commend the promotions department in stouffville place mall for trying to help others make ends meet but at the same time as a christian i have to detest the recent method that was attempted god has created us knows us and has told us what is best for us therefore it would be most advis able for us to obey his advice and stay away from these innocent looking but deceptive practices the word occult means hidden secret sinister dark or mysterious the term can be applied in general to extrasensory experiences and phenomena esp there are many types of fortune telling horoscopes palmistry the use of a rod and pendulum card laying reading tea leaves and more some fortune tellers use crystal ball and others fall into a trance but perhaps the most dangerous type are those who hide behind a reli gious facade read acts 16 occultism is not a hobby in which people dabble it is dangerous and you dont have to go far to hear the sad testimony of it many people through ignorance and curiosity have fallen prey to it people who conduct such practices are specialists only at causing neu roses in their clients and we should further say that this also applies to those newspaper editors who allow horoscopes to be printed in their publications in closing i would like everyone in stouffville and areas to know that some stores in stouffville place mall have had to close because of a lack of support my wife and i are sympathetic to the situation and will do our part in supporting all of our merchants in this area please do the same sincerely bill watts f si 1 1 1 1 i 1 5 i 1 n a i il t i l ii 1 ii j ill w m jljrt 1 si 1 ii m m i i 19 l
