tst past pla honored hockey memories abound at reunion bruce stapley correspondent they brought back the magic of the 1940s and 50s at the stouffville recreation centre lounge friday night as the markhamstouffville old- timers hockey association held their annual reunion from a podium that was backdropped with a collection of sweaters from the old stouffville and markham intermediate and junior teams awards and honors were lavished upon players and supporters both living and dead those in attendance included guest of honor and stouffville sports per sonality of the year jim clarke mayor fran sainsbury and local nhler keith acton others came from as far as collingwdod and belleville as players orga nizers wives and followers gathered to renew acquaintances master of ceremonies bud watson paid tribute to members of the associ ation who were no longer alive including howard crosby dick perry and bobby forester then expressed his regret over the recent passing of associ ation executive member bob lawrie mayor sainsbury presented a picture of a hockey scene to committee chairperson jim thomas on behalf of the town the picture is to hang in the rec centre members of the old peachs hockey team were also honored as is customary three builders were then acknowledged and presented with the max reesor builders award for contributions to hockey in the markhamstouffville area this years recipients were markhams john lunau stouffvilles ed grimshaw and stan pringle who died in 1978 harry watson noted lunau s dedication to the various teams he supported adding he did everything from acting as batboy through to serving as team president grimshaw presently first vice president of the ontario minor hockey association was introduced by jim thomas locally he has held every conceivable position in the towns hockey pro gram said thomas and now he is a lifetime member john hutchinson who presented grimshaw with his plaque noted he was a hockey ambassador without equal pringle who played with the markham juniors team that went to the ontario semifinals in 1929 was represented by his wife margie and his son grant ron hurst representing the nhl oldtimers association also made a pre sentation on behalf of his organization to lunau the max reesor players awards were given to harry milroy the late bruce harper and the late bob lawrie milroy a hockey legend in markham and stouffville starred for the old markham millionnaires and the markham oha juniors and exhibited uncanny ability and excellent sportsmanship according to bill hood who paid tribute to milroy les clarke who paid tribute to harper noted that he brought honor to both markham and stouffville in his days as a player bob bangay in honoring lawrie said he was a graceful skater who could score goals and it just wasnt in his nature to hold a grudge he was a good sportsman photobruce stapley grimshaw honored ed grimshaw left was one of three markhamstouffville hockey personalities honored with the max reesor builders award at the oldtimers hockey association reunion friday at the stouffville recreation centre making the presentation is john hutchinson also receiving builders awards were markhams john lunau and the late stan pringle photorickmadonik jon lord left of the stouffville spurs mens soccer team battles an orangeville player for possession during action saturday afternoon the contest ended in a 00 tie spurs earn tie in soccer opener it was solid endtoend soccer saturday evening as the stouffville town spurs played to a scoreless tie with orangeville at the stouffville district secondary school field the spurs playing their first ever newmarket and district soccer league contest were weakened by an injury to their top playmaker anton wilson who had to leave the game early spurs manager bill perrie felt wilsons absence might have made the difference between a win and a tie antons our main guy if he hadnt got injured i think we would have eventually gotten a goal or two he said but it was good to get one point in our first game ever in stouffville and orangeville is an estab lished team who have been together for about 15 years spurs goalie danny piggott earned the shutout while john klein came up with a big game on defence for stouffville the spurs who are still looking to add a few more players to their roster play again on may 26 in owen sound returning home for a match on june 2 second straight title fletcher paces sdss to win in york fitness challenge stouffville district secondary school sdss won their sec ond straight york region high school fitness challenge com petition monday the eightmember sdss team outscored their five com petitors in the four event fitness tournament held at sdss in winning their second con secutive title and their fifth in the six years the competition has been held sdss had to fend off a strong challenge from huron heights in new market the sdss team won the title by the narrow margin of 215 points events in the fitness chal lenge included a twomile run a rope climb sit ups and strad dle jumps in a two minute peri od kevin stemm was sdsss top individual performer placing second overall among the males teammates mike mor gan and cam harden were fifth and sixth respectively in the female side of the com petition it was raquel beecher of sdss placing third overall with anne beecher and lise haylow coming in fourth and fifth jim fletcher the stouffville schools male teacher team member was third while female teacher rep g eastman finished fifth sdss phys ed head dave connell praised the dedication of fletcher as being inspira tional to the whole team the enthusiasm of mr fletcher was the key to our winning again he said the kids got into the spirit of the thing because he was practising so much in the days leading up to the competition
