jrjtmlmiaanmrjmsa vijitfe music mania watch joan mcdonald takes on producer although producing music mania was the last thing on veter an performer joan mcdonalds mind when she joined this years chorus she took up the challenge because she was determined that the show must go on they didnt havfe a producer and they asked for a volunteer she recalls i volunteered to be coproduc er because they said that without someone in the job the show would close with no other takers she found herself fully responsible for her hew position but not without support from her peers tremendous help ive had tremendous help from the previous producers she stresses joan first moved into town in 1976 and has been a mainstay in the music mania chorus since 1979 apart from the years between 198587 i had a three year hiatus and i was out of town for about a year and a half of that she explains gormle news local girl nominated for award congratulations to miss karen paisley who received her certificate of new people that have come in she originally became involved through neighbours who were in the show it was a great opportunity to have fun and a gooctway to meet people in the community she points out id been a volunteer in school with the children and i was look ing for an adult activity music mania was ideal especially since id been in choirs all my life most newcomers to the show attend meetings with a friend but soon find themselves part of a much wider circle notes joan its a step in the right direction for people coming into the area on one occasion she met up with someone she had attended high school with when you get involved you soon find everyones looking like old friends her new role has been pretty hectic partly because of all my other commitments full plate these include a full time job with the town of markham and a position as volunteer coordinator at the new markhamstouffville hospital with so much on her plate she says something had to give i had to drop out of the music mania chorus and just do the pro ducing part she finally left the chorus about a month ago i probably will miss being in the show but i found i was get ting burned out and couldnt learn the- words of the songs she notes every spareioment i had i was sitting with the music in my lapeven in traffic it was becom ing too much of a strain and i wasnt getting any fun out of it as well she couldnt give her new position the commitment she feltwas necessary my job is finding people to do things i do all the gopher jobs for the director phone calls lining up people for this and that she explains as for next year i havent got as far as thinking about it yet joan admits that she will proba bly get involved income capaci ty but she notes that the time commitment particularly for the organizers is considerable music mania ends at the end of april and we have a meeting in june then in september it starts all over again so you dont get much of a break its almost a yearlong thing for the people behind the scenes despite the hard work she describes the show as marvellous the talent in this town is so great its incredible concludes joan performances take place at sdss on april 26 27
