stouffville merchants junior mens fastball team engage in a rousing game of basketball in the whitchurchhighlands public school gym the squads manager carl myers stands on the sidelines and fidgets theres only so much you can do inside he said of the preseason indoor practices which inevitably see the balls and gloves abandoned in a pile on the floor everybodys anxious to get outside and start the real practices were hoping to be out there by easter sunday myers has taken over the nucleus of last years stouffville midget representative ball team and is embarking on a threeyear plan he hopes will bring the provincial junior title back to whitchurch- stouffville myers managed the towns van- dorfbased junior outfit which took the allontario junior a crown in 1988 and assisted howard burkholder with last years midgets the juniors starting lineup will include several players who helped the towns bantams win the ontario championship in 1987 but burkholder who has coached those stalwarts all the way up from the lower levels of rep ball has decid ed to take a year off myers will enter his squad in the oshawa and city mens fastball league thus filling the void left by the disbandment of the stouffville betz pools mens team and while he is not conceding anything for this season he admits hes got his eyes on 1992 as the year hed like to see it all come together most of these kids will be together for three years they are mostly first year juniors with a few second and third year players its a good mix he notes that the towns minor ball association has entered a bid for the 1992 junior eliminations the annual ontario title tournament which would bring from20 to 30 top notch clubs to town thats what its all heading for he said and myers believes hell have a crew thats ready to go for all the provincial marbles by then but we should be competitive this year he said well be gearing up for the eliminations in july at grimsby myers strategy is somewhat simi lar to that employed by burkholder last season burkholders midgets competed in a junior loop the think ing being that theyd be sharper when they came back down to their rightful midget level for tourna ments and for the provincials the stouffville club weakened by the loss of pitcher scott evans to the ontario and canadian select youth teams ended up fifth in the all- ontario tournament at hagersville in july it would have worked insists myers referring to last summers shortfall but we lost a game we shouldnt have blowing a lead in the late going and that was it myers feels his team will face some of the best men pitchers iii their regular season games against their older oshawa and city league rivals which will enable them to tee off when they go up against junior hurlers in tournaments and in provincial competition myers lineup will include last years midget mainstay pitcher byron baranieski along with new markets glen coles who pitched for the east gwillimbury juniors last season chris burkholder will be the number three hurler jamie showers rob parcells and jason yoshida will return from last years stouffville midgets paul sin clair and dale jonej who skated with the uxbridge bruins junior c hockey ciub this past winter will also be on the roster myers says hes got several other prospects in mind and that while hed like to have evans he thinks the teen has decided to play out of town this summer the squad will be sponsored by a consortium of local merchants and businesses says myers some of which are yet to be found he is also looking for two coaches to run the team the club will take betz pools old wednesday night slot at the memo rial parks main diamond with the season starting in midmay as for his own part in setting the wheels in motion for the towns junior squad myers says hes just trying to make sure there will be a team for the players to do their thing this summer somebodys got to put it all together the kids want to play ball photobruce stapley carl myers coach of the stouffville merchants juniors talks fastball with players paul sinclair and chris burkholder during a recent indoor practice the squad is anxious to get outside and
