names spiral to future kate gilderdale correspondent when markham stouffville hospital opens its doors in march of this year it will be the culmination of a dream a dream made possible by the generosity of over 11000 donors within the community the donations have come from every sector corporate industrial commercial and agricultural as well as from many private individuals and the response has been incredible the enthusiasm generated at the start of the campaign in 1983 has continued to grow and flourish unabated as a condition of implementing the building of the hospital the ontario government required the community to contribute five million dollars towards the total cost as of jan 1990 close to 6200000 has been raised in addition to the original donor drive the unionville kiwanis club started distributing collection boxes to area stores in 1985 and to date they have raised approximately 19000 to acknowledge the efforts of the community the hospital board has developed a donor recognition program honoring those who have participated officials met with art consultant ann mortimer who suggested that uxbridge sculptor ron baird and his wife artist lynda baird should be invited to develop and present a proposal for their consideration after discussing the hospitals requirements with board members and marketing personnel last september the bairds started working on their concept impressed by the open airy atmosphere of the main floor and particularly the stairwell area which extends through all three floors of the building they decided that this location should be the focal point for their sculpture although the couple developed their initial ideas independently they both came up with an amazingly similar approach to the project their collaboration produced a beautiful hanging sculpture fashioned in stainless steel and anodized aluminum which is designed to be in constant motion the spiral design of the piece was inspired by the dna molecule which forms a principal constituent of human genes the sculptures upwardly spiralling movement suggests the flow of energy and the idea of giving and going beyond the concerns of the individual to support the good of the community when the bairds presented their model at the end of november it was greeted with unreserved acclaim by the board notes lynda they loved it it was amazing because they were unanimous there were no dissenters once approval was given they started work on the sculpture itself this piece will hang in the stairwell of the hospital in the well area down the three floors and it will rotate explains ron when we came up with the idea we certainly considered movement because so much of the work we do is kinetic most of our outdoor pieces are wind driven the sculpture for the markham stouffville hospital which is about 28 feet high by 6 feet wide will feature plaques in anodized aluminum these will carry 937 of the founding donor names representing those who have contributed more than 500 to the hospital fund they will comprise seven categories of participants contributors donors supporters sponsors associates patrons and benefactors the name of everyone who has contributed to the fund will be recorded in a special book of honor in the hospital lobby which will also be on public display lynda baird calls the donor recognition program fabulous for people and fabulous for art the sculpture that she and her husband have created provides a fitting memorial to an immensely successful community project now the markham stouffville hospital foundation will carry the momentum into the future to be launched at the opening gala ron and lynda baird show off a scale model of a spiral sculpture which will hang in the stairwell of markham stouffville hospital listing the names of more than 900 founding donors within the community markham unionville stouffville congratulations from the canadian progress club of markham unionville stouffville on the opening of the new markham stouffville hospital iiio i w il iiwi i imft r i m i ii iii twww w w ii mm m 166 main street markham n markham ont i mm sw sfesw ill imm h kindness courtesy and service mkm 2942030 mi bsmsmszssstmsxi
